    So the cloud is here. You use it, and with AI you are (unknowingly) encouraged to impulse-use it. Those data decisions based off your digital-self will encourage more transformation – increasingly with the new styles of UX/UI we are likely to see augmentation across digital platforms. New types of network services are coming too and with that new delivery mechanisms. Like most, we’ve heard it a few times "The Cloud is just a mainframe on the internet" but those mainframes lacked B2C integration mechanisms, so with the ability now for any IoT device (including vehicles) to provide core services locally by leveraging the cloud - we will see a stronger drive for digital transformation.     11 students from different backgrounds of engineering field attended “MATLAB Workshop”, a software introductory workshop organised by Swinburne Sarawak IET OC at the university’s campus (Building E) on 17 November 2018. Swinburne Sarawak IET OC was honored to invite Dr. Tay Fei Siang as the speaker of the workshop who has up to 9 years teaching experience at Swinburne University of Technology. The workshop was designed to introduce the software to students of various backgrounds. Throughout the workshop, participants were exposed the fundamentals of MATLAB. Participants familiarized themselves with the concept of variables and learned to develop and run several mathematical algorithms. This was then followed by introduction of array and matrix.   • [Swinburne IET OC]: 180912 SSIET Annual General Meeting (AGM)

    Swinburne Sarawak OC held the Annual General Meeting of 2018 on 12th September 2018. The meeting started at 6.30 pm and lasted for around two hours. There were 34 participants. The meeting started off with opening remarks from former president, Jonathan Ho, followed by a welcoming speech by main advisor, Dr. Chua Hong Siang. Jonathan Ho gave detailed information about all the activities organized by SSIET last semester. The presentation was followed by the financial report presentation by the former treasurer, Melvin Wee. He then handed over the year-end balance sheet to the newly appointed Treasurer, Jehovah Yii.     In conjunction with Swinburne Graduation and Career fair on 30 October 2018, Swinburne Sarawak IET On Campus and Intel Malaysia jointly organised an informative talk aimed to expose students to the work life and benefits offered by Intel. The talk was delivered by Mr. Alex Goon from the Human Resources Department of Intel Malaysia. More than 21 students had attended the talk. In the presentation, Mr Alex introduced the company. He also highlighted developments of drones and artificial intelligence.

  • Blockchain Technology: How Disruptive Can It Be? (IET London - Harrow)

    An insightful and coherent session on the many varied uses of Blockchain was presented by Shamit Bhat, Interoperability Solutions Director at GSMA at the IET London – Harrow event held at Harrow College. He explained how chains are made and how they interact to create blocks – It is the combination of how the blocks are used by different nodes in a given network that highlights the benefits of Blockchain technology with respect to confidentially, integrity and availability. He also explained the concepts of alternative crypto currencies and how if there is enough buzz/traction mixed with market capitlisation of the coin, the market is likely to respond in kind :) He then spoke about the efficiencies of self executing contracts and how they can reduce transaction times down to seconds.     Swinburne Sarawak OC organised a talk on preparation for BEM PCE Exam at the university’s campus on 27 October 2018. The talk aimed to let students and practicing engineers (IET and non-IET members) gain more understanding on the BEM Professional Competency Examination (PCE), and be better equipped for the exam. The talk was delivered by Professional Engineer Ir. Kuan Jew Xun from MH Technology Borneo Sdn. Bhd.   • [Swinburne IET OC]: 181221 Team Building - Gunung Gading National Park

    Swinburne Sarawak IET On Campus (SSIET) had successfully organized Team Building 2018. It was held on 21 December 2018 where Gunung Gading National Park was the chosen destination. The purpose of this event was to strengthen the bonds of the participants from different engineering backgrounds. A total of 11 IET members participated in this event, including 2 YPS Malaysia representatives, namely Mr. Ivan Ling and Mr. Peter Ling. Participants first gathered at Swinburne University of Technology Sarawak Campus at around 7.30 am and signed attendance and indemnity forms.   • Leadership Programme 2018 - Quiz Night

    Over the course of 6 months, 6 workshops and 22 meetings, my team brought together 1 project – the IET Quiz Night: Celebrating Women in STEM. As part of the 2018 IET Leadership Programme cohort, we sharpened and honed both our project management and leadership skills, overcame many challenges and pushed ourselves to achieve more than we thought we could. As a team, we were split into 3 groups – marketing, logistics and operations. We had a mentor that helped guide us through the project and keep us on track. However, all the work was accomplished ourselves in order to give us a real taste of project management. Most notably, however, was that this was done in a safe environment where we were allowed to fail without consequence, and this allowed my team and I to explore and develop our skills…

    Heading into the 2018 IET Leadership Programme, I had already gained some experience working on team-based projects throughout my university studies and engineering vacation programs. I was expecting something similar throughout this Leadership Programme with IET, where I would leverage and build upon the same skills I had been developing throughout university and perhaps improve on some skills which I was lacking. Whilst this program definitely made use of many skills I already had, I found that the skills I mostly used were skills which I had not considered the significance of and importance in the industry, prior to this.     I started the IET Leadership Programme in March 2018, along with many other participants from different universities and professional fields. The Leadership Programme aims to help participants develop their leadership and project management skills, and for me it truly did. The program requires participants to execute the allocated project with the help of carefully designed workshops and experienced mentors. There were a total of 6 workshops which focused on personality types, project management, developing and leading successful teams, interviews, transition from university to full-time employment, and project presentations.
