With an annual production capacity in excess of 300,000 tonnes Fane Valley Feeds is one of the largest feed manufacturers in Northern Ireland and on the afternoon of the 18 th November 2015 the local IET Young Professionals made a visit to their Bankmore mill in Omagh. Fane Valleys history in Omagh stems from their purchase of the old Scots Feeds mill located in the centre of the town. Our tour guide, ex Production Director William McAusland, picked up the story of how this mill was no longer fit for purpose and Fane Valley made the decision to invest £18 million building what is their current mill. This background proved a perfect recipe for a brilliant tour, as having been responsible for leading the process of designing the mill William gave an excellent insight into its construction. In…

Rich Baker and Geoff Kermode presented the latest instalment of the IET Tribology Tour in the Innovation Centre of the Northern Ireland Science Park last month. The Tribology Tour bringing Tribology to life by showing how Tribology underpins so many essential aspects of our technology and quality of life. It also provides an introduction to the concepts and principles underpinning Tribology and shows how modern techniques can be used to optimise a wide variety of mechanical interfaces, from hard drives to wind turbines and hip joints. The audience reacted very positively to the interactive challenges posed during the presentation. This led on to an invigorating open discussion on many aspects of Tribology which continued after 9pm! A real highlight was that several audience members formed…

ITS Successes in Addressing Environmental Issues was the theme of the 2015 ITS(UK) Smart Environment Interest Group (SEIG) Conference, jointly sponsored by the Institution of Engineering and Technology’s Automotive and Road Transport Technical Network, and hosted by the engineering company Arup, in London on 19 November 2015. The SEIG Chair - Professor Margaret Bell CBE, Newcastle University, introduced the Conference and made the point that in the UK there are 50,000 premature deaths annually due to air pollution, much of it from road vehicles, compared to less than 2000 deaths in road traffic accidents. The first paper, “Using Traffic Management Strategies to Minimise NOx Emissions”, by Andrew Hamilton of Siemens, described a project to demonstrate the feasibility of using traffic management…
Envisaged as one of the biggest challenges and opportunities for the future of aerospace the inaugural “All Electric Aircraft Technology” IET Symposium held at Savoy Place in late January 2016 brought together experts from across academia and industry to discuss, debate and analyze the key enabling technologies that will be required to support and drive forward the commercial viability of More Electric Airplane with the aim of ultimately achieving an All Electric Aircraft for both military and commercial passenger/freight use. Fueled by the demand for greater reliability, availability, and power density while aiming to reduce weight, complexity, fuel consumption, operational costs, and environmental impact, the Symposium highlighted the challenges the aerospace sector faces today and those…

Technical Aspects of Fracking Presentation On 10 th December 2015 the South Yorkshire local IMechE, ICE & IET had a joint PEI presentation at the AMRC in Rotherham on the “Technical aspects for Fracking”. Hydraulic fracturing for shale gas is a highly sensitive topic but it was felt a presentation on the Technical involvement would be of considerable interest and move away for the political sensitivities surrounding it. Andy Sloane who works for Dundas Consultants & Eric Vaughan from Cuadrilla gave an excellent presentation based around the historical background surrounding fracking, some of the issues experienced with the USA programme and the arrangements for UK regulation of the industry, if and when it gets a ‘green light to proceed. The presentation slides showed how well-heads…
