  • Are we nearly there yet? - Safety challenges on the path to Autonomy

On the 17 th May 2016 the IET will be addressing the question ‘are we nearly there yet? - Safety challenges on the path to Autonomy’ at Active Safety Europe 2016: ADAS to Autonomous Conference in Munich. This IET session will address how we demonstrate the technological maturity, reliability and safety of the software required for automated driving for all stakeholders involved on public roads. What’s the OEM’s perspective?: Exploring the ADAS glidepath vs. straight to autonomy, considering the requirements for higher level autonomy systems. Safety vs. Risk: Understanding the safety improvements achieved by ADAS, considering their potential risks, how to manage these risks and the limitation of current guidelines. Using safety arguments and expected driver behaviour in order to design for the…

  • Transport Section: Technical Visit To Thomson-East Coast Line (TEL)

Technical visits are real highlights of our Singapore Network activity, presenting opportunities and insights that are difficult to obtain without the reach and influence of a professional organisation. 20 members and aspiring engineers were able to appreciate such an experience with the visit on 12th May 2016 to tunnel works on the Woodlands section of the Thomson-East Coast Line. This 43km new line will add 31 new stations to the existing rail network, with 7 interchange stations to link with the East-West, North-South, North-East, Circle and Downtown Lines. The visiting team assembled at the Hampshire headquarters of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and each person was issued with the personal protection equipment essential for entering the T206 construction site where the Earth Pressured…

  • 150th Anniversary Of The Transatlantic Telegraph Cable - Lecture At Savoy Place 16 June 2016

As part of the 150th anniversary of the first durable Trans-Atlantic telegraph cables, Donard de Cogan is presenting a series of talks on the great enterprise and its aftermath. On 21st March the Norwich Engineering Society heard about the people who reported the events, using material from the IET Archives. On 16th April the IET Ireland Network were told of the Irish dimension. This lecture in Savoy Place will trace the various expeditions (1857, 1858, 1865 and 1866). It will discuss the lessons learned from the early disasters and near disasters and will cover the techniques used for testing the cable during manufacture as well as during submersion; all part of a learning exercise that ensured ultimate success during summer 1866. There will be a display of historical artefacts relating to…

  • Robots Helping People

IET Central London Evening Lecture, Savoy Place, 11-May-2016  Professor Yiannis Demiris, Personal Robotics Laboratory, Imperial College, London Are robots our enemies? Will they take over the world from humans?  Not at all! As long as engineering teams like this one at Imperial College prevail. Their ethos is to contribute to the betterment of the human race: Not by replacing humans, but by assisting us to do things better, particularly where we have disabilities or recuperation challenges. They have learnt not to try to help people who don't want help. Their robotic applications include such areas as: Smart robotic wheelchairs for kids with disabilities.  Reinforcing rehabilitation exercises.  Assisting people with dressing.  Learning physical tasks such as dancing; the robot adapts to what…

  • Speaker Highlight - The Future Of Medicine - The Role Of Doctors In 2025

We are delighted to share further information on another one of our expert speakers from the programme for the Future of Medicine event; Mr Kai-Lik Foh, Senior Manager, mHealth, he will be speaking on the very important topic “The opportunities and challenges of telemedicine in developing countries.” The shortage of healthcare expertise and infrastructure is a global problem, but nowhere more apparent than in developing countries. Telemedicine, particularly leveraging the ubiquity of mobile, has the opportunity not only to impact on health education, but also in the areas of diagnosis, treatment and follow up. There are a number of technology innovations which already make this possible today. Regulations on healthcare practice and funding will however need to evolve to be able to fully leverage…

  • Inspiring The Next Generation

The IET as part of its mission seeks to Inspire people from all walks of life about what can be achieved with Engineering and a key part of that is opening young minds to the possibilities that an Engineering career can bring them with opportunities ranging from apprenticeships through to Engineering Council Registration. To support this Members and volunteers within the Southern California Local Network have for many years been supporting teams in the First Lego League and we are delighted to see that as the operational partner for the First Lego League in the UK, the IET has just started a junior event . This year as part of the IET focus on inspiring young minds to these opportunities we have decided to go further with our outreach to the local community through donations and visits to local…

  • This May Use RBAC To Spring Clean Your Technology Estate !

The month of May usually finds us going through the cycle of spring cleaning. This allows our space to be regulated of what is no longer required, or understanding that the short term fix is now actually part of day to day activities or even that the core components of our environment are not refining themselves anymore because of the clutter. Often, in high profile transactional environments, the tech stack is constantly in a state of tactical or strategic flux. It organically builds where it heads to either a bottleneck of services or where the ability to scale is diminished - simply because the clutter is too much. Whilst business managers may use tracking schedules of a project to give a sense of accountability, technology focused individuals usually derive the same level of accountability…

  • Apollo 13 - How NASA Saved The Crew Of The Crippled Moon Mission

We’ve all seen the movie and watched Tom Hanks (as Jim Lovell) and his fellow crew members survive the near catastrophic explosion that crippled the Apollo 13 spacecraft, but what was it actually like being in Mission Control on the 11 th 17 th April in 1970?   The planned lunar landing was instantly called off and the new challenge was to get the spacecraft safely back to Earth. When the carbon dioxide in the three astronaut’s exhaled breath threatened to asphyxiate them, the crew improvised a filter device, which had been tested in Mission Control, to make the air breathable. Only hours before hurtling back into the atmosphere did they power up the Apollo spacecraft again not knowing if it had been fatally damaged in the explosion.   Our event this evening  (May 5th) at the Cameo Hotel in…

  • First IET CoderDojo Club was a Success!

The IET first ever CoderDojo club took place on Saturday 30 April, at our Stevenage office! CoderDojo  is a global movement of free, volunteer-led,  community based programming clubs for young people. At a Dojo, young people, between 7 and 17, learn how to code, develop websites, apps, programs, games and explore technology in an informal and creative environment. In addition to learning to code attendees meet like minded people and are exposed to the possibilities of technology. I had just over 30 children attend, some accompanied by their parents. The feedback received so far has been fantastic and a lot of the children are excited to join future sessions. The first club focused on building a website and a game using HTML and Scratch. Whilst classes are open to girls and boys, I put an emphasis…
