    Instrument Development And Professional Registration

Steps to Increase Effectiveness in Instrument Development (Especially in Meeting Regulatory Requirements for the Health Care Market) Chai Meng Fee There are so many options in technology, tools and resources which are available to us to develop new products today. So where do we start? Chai Meng Fee, who is currently the President for Agilent Malaysia and with close to 30- years of working experience in various industries and different fields, firmly believes that a set of “good practice” guidelines that complies to the appropriate requirements should be the guiding light. Clearly this can help to lower overall development cost, reduce technical risk, as well the potential to shorten project schedule too. This is especially important when launching instrument product for the health care market…

    HTN Community Update - 28 August 2015

As the summer break draws to a close, I wanted to take the opportunity to look back at some of the fantastic events the Healthcare Technologies network (HTN) has been involved in this session. The year began with our Healthcare Technologies Student and Early Career Awards in February 2015, this time working in collaboration with the IMechE’s Biomedical Engineering Association (BmEA). The quality of entries was excellent, as were the presentations, and I’m very pleased to announce that the winners of the IET Awards will be presenting at our Annual Healthcare Lecture in November. In May 2015 we collaborated with the Royal Society of Medicine to produce the very successful one day seminar discussing the topic of ‘ The future of medicine – the role of the doctor in 2025 ’. I’m delighted to say…

  • The power of online communities

    The power of online communities

One of the questions we get asked about online communities is ‘Why bother?’ It’s a fair question and rather than giving you a list of theoretical answers we came across an example where virtual discussions in the IET Control & Automation Online Community became a physical event which will be taking place in September 2015. It’s a good illustration of the potential online communities have to meet the IET’s objectives. A discussion that began on MyCommunity has developed into new event for the Control & Automation Technical and Professional Network (TPN). Real value can come from getting involved in discussions on MyCommunity, as shown by the creation of the upcoming lecture on the use of dynamic simulation in the development of control systems. This event was developed off the back of a discussion…

    IET SGM - Please Vote

Just a reminder that the IET SGM is coming up. You should all have received voting papers either in the post or by email now. Please take the time to read the proposals and vote! There is a large amount of information available on the internet for both options. It is important that the outcome of the SGM reflects what the membership actually wants, and this is only possible if the membership votes :) If you have questions about using a proxy, or about the two proposals, please comment below, and I will endeavour to provide un-biased help/answers. If you would like my personal opinion, I can of course also give this, but I encourage you to make up your own mind.

  • Why Robot?

    Why Robot?

I was reading this morning about Google's humanoid robot, Atlas, that can run on natural terrains without falling. Atlas is over 6ft tall and it seems that he has been scaring some folks! The latest iteration of Atlas can now run on battery power and be controlled wirelessly. So, this got me thinking! Robots are a good thing right? So why are humans so mean to them? You will no doubt have seen the report of HitchBOT being "killed" in Philadephia at the beginning of August. It was part of a social experiment to assess how humans relate to robots, and then, not longer after that there was a report in the news about some children in Japan who attacked a stray robot walking round a shopping mall. Most children simply stepped aside and didn't get in the way, however there were a number who deliberately…
