  • Inspiring children at the Engineering Open House day 2019!

    For the fifth year in a row, Engineering Open House Day saw children and their parents go behind the scenes of well-known engineering and technology brands, as 64 companies got involved with 53 events taking place up and down the country.Companies such as Amazon, The National Theatre, Ofcom, Royal Mail and BBC Birmingham opened their doors to showcase the huge variety of engineering and technology roles within. The events demonstrated the plethora of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) careers available. The successful events follow new IET research, which shows nearly a quarter (24%) of parents say their children have expressed an interest in engineering as a future career.     Reminder - Visit to INEOS Grangemouth - 4 September 2019Our next event is a visit to INEOS Grangemouth on Wednesday 4 September at 1400. The visit will comprise a multi-speaker presentation on the site's products and processes and the engineering challenges and solutions from the mechanical, electrical and C&I perspectives.   • IET Engineering & Technology Photographer Of The Year 2019

    There’s still time to enter the IET’s photography competition!The IET’s annual photography competition for 2019 launched earlier this year in a bid to challenge public misconceptions of engineering and technology and dispel its traditional image of hard hats and dirty overalls. The competition, which closes on 30 August, is open to any photograph of an engineering-related subject that captures the dynamic, creative and progressive face of engineering and engineers today.   • Joint PEI Visit To The Factory 2050 - Advanced Manufacturing Site - Sheffield Business Park.

    On the 29th July 2019 the local Joint PEI Committee successfully arranged a visit to the IMG Boeing Factory 2050 site based on the Sheffield Business Park which is located on the outskirts of Rotherham.This is a very high tech, leading edge, Manufacturing Research facility which explores many new Manufacturing Techniques using Robotics, AI, AR & VR. They have a strong presence in the Aerospace and Automotive industries but also a surprising link with the construction industry with new build housing with companies such as Laing O'Rourke.   • Project Controls Expo Awards 2019

    Now in its 2nd edition, the Project Controls Expo Awards sponsored by Oracle, looks to give recognition to individuals, projects, programmes and organisations for the successful delivery in the application of project controls.In 2018 over 300 global professionals from different industry sectors, came together to celebrate innovation and excellence in project controls.   • University Of Kent School Of Engineering And Digital Arts Graduate Reception And Prize Giving 2019

    Chris Read BSc CEng MIET, from IET Kent, presented Camilla Felici with the IET Prize at the Univerity of Kent School of Engineering and Digital Arts Graduate Reception and Prize Giving, held on 18th July 2019.  This is a National Prize awarded for Distinction by a Final Year Student on an IET Accredited Course.  The prize is two years free IET membership and is open to all undergraduates on IET accredited courses.

  • IET NorCal and Girl Scouts work together to support STEM program.

    For their annual Girl Scout Camporee, IET NorCal provided the Crestablanca service unit of Girl Scouts NorCal with Microbits designed by the MicroBit foundation as part of the STEM program.   • WES Centenary Celebration Event Held At The Cutlers Hall In Sheffield On 27th June 2019.

    The local SY Joint PEI committee agreed to hold a special event on the 27th June 2019 to recognise and celebrate the centenary of the Women's Engineering Society (WES) The venue chosen for this event was the Cutlers Hall located in the center of Sheffield. To celebrate this event, the committee sought to find a series of high profile women who could deliver key note presentations and support a Networking session in the second session of the event.     It has been over three months since NAB2019 in Las Vegas which I thought was a suitable time to look back at the event and what has been the key themes that stemmed from it. ATSC3.0 A big focus was ATSC3.0, which is almost a perennial discussion. The key change this year though is that  actual field tests have actually taken place in the US in May , as well as the  beginning of the FCC issuing of licenses . At the conference itself ATSC3.0 was declared ‘Ready for Deployment’ which was somewhat old news as it has been already  deployed in South Korea in 2017  but that is countered by the somewhat big lack of devices that support the standard outside of Korea.     Dr. Ravi N. Margasahayam, M.S., M.B.A, Co-Chair for Ground Safety Review Panel (GSRP) - NASA, gave an inspirational talk on the value of innovation and how thinking different is the best way to fix problems. His talk described the different challenges he has encountered over the years and how space exploration has given him opportunity to create multi-tiered solution models. These innovation equations have developed into team collaboration methods within NASA, where bedrock principles help define organisational excellence. Specifically, he talked about how lessons learned are crucial in ensuring technology innovations remains relevant not only for the team but for the entire industry.     IET SYLN were once again able to support and co-sponsor the overall the Big Bang event held at the Doncaster Racecourse on the 25th June 2019 This is an annual event set up by the area STEM Hub DEBP Ltd and attracted over 4000 schoolchildren from around the South Yorkshire region and some from beyond.   • (updated) Two Teams From Malaysia Shortlisted For IET Global Challenge

    Two teams from Malaysia had been shortlisted for IET Global Challenge 2018/19. Organized in partnership with Greenpeace and GreenSeas, the IET Global Challenge is a competition for 18 to 35-year-olds to develop an innovative solution to tackle the problem of plastic waste in the oceans. The Greenpeace challenge required participants to propose a practical way to reduce overall use of packaging, eliminate single-use plastic packaging by 2025, and introduce more reusable packaging formats. Meanwhile, to qualify into the GreenSeas challenge, participants should create a remotely-controlled all-terrain machine that is capable of moving up and down the beach for a reasonable amount of time, picking up cigarette butts from the surface of the sand and collecting them in a chamber or hopper.   • Time For Change: Addressing The Energy Deficit That Is Emerging Resulting From The Move To Electric Cars

    With the continued decline in the auto sector I think new personal challenges (and opportunities) await ahead. The auto sector is being squeezed by several forces and all is not just Brexit related. Yes the uncertainty of the Brexit situation is a significant factor but manufacturing can always deal with change. Whilst not wishing to come down in favour of either the remain or leave position, it is the uncertainty generated during ongoing debate since the referendum by all sides of the argument that has resulted in a toxic situation in the economic, social, commercial and political spheres.  This is significantly damaging our auto industry and supplier base.  Far more significant though is the misinformed statements that are constantly emerging relating to diesel engines. It is beyond doubt…
