  • Vehicle-to-Grid - Technology, Challenges And Benefits

For this month's guest posting for the Automotive and Road Transport Network, Bunmi Adefajo from the Software Innovation Team at TNEI explains the concept of Vehicle to Grid technology and the benefits it can provide . With the increased government and private funding in research and development in battery technology for electric vehicles, the Innovation team at TNEI has reviewed V2G technology, the challenges it faces, and explored ongoing V2G trials and potential applications. What is Vehicle-to-Grid Technology? Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) is the technology which allows battery powered electric vehicles (EVs) to act as mobile energy storage units. This means that as well as importing, electric vehicles can export power onto the electrical network when required, via a bidirectional charging unit…

  • Society Insights: August 2017 - Mining The Seafloor And Cognitive Intelligence

This month we feature two interesting subjects covered by IET Local Networks recently. How can transparency be improved in the sustainable use of natural resources that society demands and how cognitive intelligence is being used to replicate human behaviour in complex situations like war and diagnosis of cancer...   Mining the seafloor East Midlands Local Network   The demand for metals and minerals continues to grow. This is in part thanks to the continued popularity of high-tech consumer devices as well as the expanding renewable energy sector; both large consumers of these materials. This popularity has necessitated researching alternative means of securing more of these natural resources, and one possible solution has been to mine the deep sea.   Currently most work is focusing on deep…

  • Cyber Security: Hollywood vs Real Life

I found this interesting article about the few times when film and TV has gotten hacking right. As the article explains, most of the time, realistic cybersecurity and hacking aren’t visually very exciting subjects, meaning they tend to change it to amp up the drama The NCIS and CSI franchises get it hilariously wrong and as the article points out, films like War Game and shows like Mr Robot have got it right. http://www.darkreading.com/attacks-breaches/6-times-hollywood-got-security-right/d/d-id/1328696     What films and TV have got it right and which are getting it oh-so wrong? Let me know in the comments section below.

  • Are Electric Motorbikes Better Than Petrol Ones?

They certainly were at Anglesey Circuit on 13 August.  Its one of my favourite circuits, a great location with the sea right up by the circuit and the views of the Snowdonia mountain range in the background and looking towards South Stack from another viewpoint as well. You get a good crowd of riders and spectators and the race officials at NG Racing who run the races are always friendly.  Plus the weather was good, relatively warm, but not too bright and sunny for the riders.  It was the first round of the 2017 MotoE Racing championship, an innovative race series for electric motorcycles, which the IET’s Automotive & Road Transport Systems Technical Professional Network support, as its aimed at university teams, plus all the Technical Commission are IET members. Normally there are around 5…

  • National Initiative For Cyber Education (NICE)

The NICE framework being introduced by nist.gov is pragmatic in its approach and offers understandings that can be adopted by any organisation. Specifically, it lets you identify what cyber designations are applicable to your organisation and which specific combination of academic, certifications and apprenticeship models are applicable to your company.   Current cyber qualifications are limited and somewhat restricted as they are based off TCP/IP technology ecosystems, the NICE framework, goes one step further and allows you to move beyond the client/server architecture to identify what combinations of any cyber activities will be applicable to your needs.  It lets you make qualitative and quantitative cyber assessments without any bias. Its framework uses a common body of knowledge (CBK)…
