Combined technology portfolio offers a one-stop shop for managing voltages and power flows as more low carbon technologies are connected
Fundamentals, the experts in intelligent grid voltage control, has partnered with EcoJoule Energy, a provider of innovative, next generation power management solutions for the electricity grid. To enhance the reliance of a low carbon grid, the partnership extends the range of tools that Fundamentals already offers for High Voltage (HV) networks to Low Voltage (LV) networks by introducing two key devices: battery energy storage systems to help manage power flows by charging at times of high solar energy and discharging at times of high consumer energy demand, and static compensator devices to regulate voltages and reduce phase imbalances caused by increasing numbers of low carbon technology connections.
Through its partnership, Fundamentals and EcoJoule Energy can guarantee voltage compliance, making use of existing infrastructure rather than replacing it, so intermittent loads from solar energy sources can be balanced with the peaks and troughs that come from low carbon technologies like heat pumps and electric vehicles.
Solar is expected to be the largest electricity source in the EU by 2030 and plays a crucial role in electrifying the energy industry. The UK government has pledged to triple solar power by 2030, while the EU’s Solar Rooftop Standard is expected to drive up to 200 GW of additional solar capacity between 2026 and 2030.
Dr. Jon Hiscock, CEO of Fundamentals commented: “The electricity sector needs to be rewired for a net zero future. Aging power grids are struggling to cope with swings in voltages as more renewable energy and low carbon technologies are connected. Our partnership with EcoJoule Energy will make us the first provider that can deliver end-to-end voltage compliance for a low carbon grid, enabling network operators to leverage solar and create a resilient infrastructure for the future.”
EcoJoule Energy’s grid distribution technologies are now integrated into Fundamentals existing Total Voltage Control solution, a suite of coordinated, wide area control solutions for HV and LV networks. The partnership enables power grid operators to maintain voltage stability and protect network performance.
The partnership targets distribution network operators in the UK and Europe offering:
- Improved customer experience by protecting the quality of voltage control across energy networks and reduce network losses
- Cost efficiencies by enabling network operators to maintain existing network assets and delay the cost of reinforcement
- Guaranteed voltage compliance with local support and expertise
- Accelerated connections of low carbon technologies through advanced and coordinated voltage control methodologies
“Fundamentals is already an experienced and trusted local partner to network operators in Europe and together we will be able to increase the support we can offer,” concluded Mike Wishart, CEO of EcoJoule Energy. “Combining our expertise in voltage control technologies, will allow us to transform established electricity grids across Europe into distributed, flexible, intelligent and sustainable systems that can handle the complex demands of a low carbon future.”
