Are you sure it wasn't a PRI? I have not previously heard of a TKA and the normal decision on receipt of an application is an option of:

1. Proceed to PRI;

2. Reject; or

3. Request further evidence (and then 1 or 2 above).

Can you give a bit more information about the request to attend the TKA, please.

My understanding regarding C.Eng process is same as yours, but during the interview one of the interviewer told me about second Interview and this got me confused. when I looked at TKA guideline it mentions about Interview but not very clearly.

I successfully completed my CEng recently.  There was only one interview that I had - the PRI - and that is the last stage of the process.  After that the IET then pass on their recommendation to the Engineering Council who then have the final say.  There is no further interview process that I was made aware of.

The Engineering Council registration requirements currently require a two-stage assessment of:

• Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding (UK&U)

• Competence

The first is primarily about technical knowledge and for many is met by formal educational qualifications. Where these are absent, the IET uses a number of methods to attempt to identify the presence of appropriate knowledge. TKA (Technical Knowledge Assessment) is the most onerous of these methods and only applied in a relatively small number of cases. A TKA interview is the final part of this process. If the candidate demonstrates UK&U at TKA they proceed to the Professional Review Interview (PRI) which assess competence.
All applicants for Incorporated or Chartered Engineer status have their UK&U and Competence assessed and all attend a PRI.

Just to add a little to what Lynton has said.  TKA is applied only in a small number of cases and is normally applied when the candidate does not possess an exemplifying qualification and does not provide sufficient evidence of Underpinning Knowledge and Understanding (UK&U) in their application.  When your application is submitted it goes into the first stage assessment at which your UK&U and your competence are examined; unless you hold an exemplifying qualification (e.g. accredited MEng for CEng), in which case only competence is evaluated.  If both are deemed satisfactory by the assessors, your application will be passed to PRI.  If the evidence in your application is such that either factor is not deemed to have been satisfied, you will be asked for further information.  This can take several forms.

For UK&U you may be asked for a written statement of further evidence of UK&U or you may be asked to undertake a TKA.  Which route is taken is at the discretion of the assessors and will depend on the depth of the missing information in the application.

For competence, you may be asked for a full evidence statement for one or more competencies (most commonly A and B, but can be any).

As Lynton has rightly pointed out, the key difference between a TKA interview and a PRI is that the former will focus on your technical knowledge, whereas the latter will focus on competence evidence.  While the format may be similar, the content of the TKA should be quite different and you will need to prepare differently for PRI, focusing on how you exemplify the competences.

The gap between the TKA and the PRI can vary considerably, depending on where the various interview cycles are and I'm afraid I can't provide much guidance in this respect.

You are right, I have Bachelor's degree in Engineering, that might be the reason for having TKA process. My TKA was fine and hope I will go through the PRI.
