Tell everybody, who you are, what you do, who you would like to connect with and why you joined IET Professional Development, on the My Community platform - what are you hoping to get out of it?

This is a great way to learn more about others and extend your professional network.

  • Welcome to the community, Hussain.

Have you logged in to IET Career Manager?  This would be my top tip to those working toward professional registration.  There are quick guides and on demand webinars to help you get started, or built in guidance to get started.

You an also join the IET's IPD Service, a one stop shop for all the information you need to know about professional registration.

    Regards,

  • James / Thomas, hello to both.  make sure you register with the IET, and look into requesting a mentor and a PRA.  Both of these will be of help in the process of your applications.  Also take a look at getting involved with your regional group or special interest group - one or both offer networking oportunities where you can meet with local membership advisors, others on the same or similar journeys, etc.

Good luck to both of you.

    Hi Tom,

It sounds as though you have a solid foundation for an IEng application in due course. However, if you've not already done so, you could apply for Eng Tech now, and use this as a stepping stone to IEng. You shouln't have any difficulty in obtaining Eng Tech.

    All the best

I do not know if it would be possible, but if
your company provides equipment to “B” in Crewe (they have an
Accredited Graduate Training Scheme with the IET) it may be
possible to come to an arrangement with them. This may not only
help you but also give a closer tie between the companies.

Just a thought, best wishes in your
    career.

    Hi all!

Just a quick introduction as I am new to the world of IET membership.

I began my engineering life as an apprentice electrician, becoming fully qualified and working up through the ranks, gaining invaluable experience.

Years down the line, I now work for J Murphy and Sons in and around the midlands, as an M&E Project Manager and I am fitting in a FdEng in part time around my job.

Can I gain professional accreditation with this foundation degree or will I need to top up to a bachelors.  I am asking this as it is also something I will need to fit in part time around my employment, potentially adding a further 2 years to my studies and I was hoping maybe somebody here has had a similar journey?

Any advice would be hugely appreciated.
  • Hi Kevin,

When you mention professional accreditation, are you looking at professional registration as an EngTech or an IEng?

    Regards,

    Kathryn

  • Hi,

I did something very similar to this myself. You are definitely in
the right professional body as here you'll be able to develop
    various strings to your bow.

Worked as an electronics technician back in the 70s, left the
engineering side of things and went off and did something
completely different, then after seven years retrained as an
electrician and continued retraining, became a teacher while
running a small electrical business and was invited to join the
IEE. Soon after that it became the IET, which is perfect for all
    those Raspberry Pie enthusiasts.

    Hi Kevin,

From what you say about your career so far, I see no reason
why you should apply for Eng. Tech registration straight away. You
will then be in a better position to move forward to I Eng. and
possible C Eng. depending how far you go with your formal
qualifications. But the immediate step would be to apply for Eng.
Tech, help is available with this, from the IET, via a PRA
    (Professional Registration Advisor).

    Hope this helps

Thank you for your responses, I am extremely grateful.

Kathryn, I was hoping for an IEng but as Bob has commented, perhaps an EngTech might be more suitable at this time?

Legh, very good to hear from someone such as yourself who has followed a similar path. To hear you've made a success of it means I'm probably doing something right!
