Can Incorporated Engineer (IEng) apply for EUR ING Status?

Hi all,

I am wondering if anyone can advise me on the EUR ING application.

I have recently attained Incorporated Engineer (IEng) Status. I graduated with BEng (HONS) from Northumbria University (through distance learning in Malaysia) and have 15 years of professional experience.

I’m looking for recognition in Europe so that I could gain the opportunity for an inter-departmental transfer within my organization.

My question is as follows:

  1. Does EUR ING applicant require to have attained Chartered Engineer (CEng) Status?
  2. Does an Incorporated Engineer (IEng) able to apply for EUR ING status?

There may be a few other questions that I may have overlooked prior to considering the EUR ING application. Looking forward to your guidance and feedback.

Advice from experts is much appreciated.

Yes, I asked the Engineering Council this in February this year, and their Registration Manager confirmed that "Originally EUR ING was only available to CEng registrants but a few year ago, the rules changed to also make it available for IEng registrants".

I am an IEng (although now registered with the BCS instead of the IET) and submitted my EUR ING application last month and am currently waiting to hear back.

Although the Engineering Council changed the rules a few years ago, the IET were quite slow to update their information on this - I had asked the same question to the IET in March last year and had the response from their Registration and Standards International Advisor that "only registered CEngs are currently able to apply for FEANI EUR ING Registration and that, unfortunately, you not eligible to apply for EUR ING registration", which was clearly incorrect advice. The IET's webpage about EUR ING also incorrectly stated that only CEng registrants were eligible to apply for EUR ING up until when they corrected it at some point this year.

Regarding academic qualifications, you can still apply for EUR ING without any academic qualifications whatsoever, as long as you can demonstrate the equivalent underpinning knowledge and understanding, which in practice means filling in an additional section of the application form. I'd recommend registering for the online application tool at euring.engineerseurope.com and watching the videos which explain how to apply. There's also lots of additional information at www.engineerseurope.com/what-eur-ing-certificate and as others have already suggested, contact the Engineering Council if anything needs any clarification.

    Hope this helps

  • Hi Sam,

Thank You for providing this valuable input. You're in a similar situation which helps me get the feedback needed for clarification. Let us know how the application when through once you attain the EUR ING title.

    Good Luck,

    Thiben K.

  • Thanks Sam for a really useful reply!

Hi Thiben, I've just heard back from the Engineering Council today that my EUR ING application has been successful. Let me know if you need any further help with your application.

  • Congratulations Sam! It might be useful for others for you to share briefly what you needed to do for this?

  • Congratulations Sam! As what Andy has mentioned, it would greatly benefit the IET Community who are going through similar situation.

Appreciate your response on my concern as it gave me the confidence to progress with my EUR ING application. Thank You!

Hi Andy, yes here's a brief overview of what I did.

I submitted my EUR ING application through the online application form on the Engineers Europe website at www.engineerseurope.com. This is initially checked by the National Monitoring Committee (NMC), which in Britain is the Engineering Council, who first checked that my IEng registration with the BCS was current. After obtaining confirmation of my IEng registration on the 22nd of June, the Engineering Council then asked me to pay my application fee and wait for the results, following which I heard from the Engineering Council on the 17th of November that my application had been successful.

I did not have to attend an interview, either online or in-person. As far as I am aware, the PEIs do not have any direct involvement in the EUR ING application process, other than ensuring that the applicant holds a current CEng or IEng registration with the Engineering Council.

One additional point was that although holding IEng instead of CEng registration, I did also hold an EQF level 7 qualification and therefore didn't need to provide evidence of work-based learning. I understand that if applicants lack the required academic qualification, an additional section of the online EUR ING application form can be filled in to demonstrate this.

Hope this is helpful for other potential applicants.

  • Hi and

My EUR ING application has been successful!

I had so many doubts going through the application process for almost a year, but I managed to fight through anxiety and get all the relevant information to fulfill the application requirements. Thank you for your valuable input.

My experience with the EUR ING application process is a little different. I submitted my EUR ING application through the online application form on Engineers Europe on the 8th of Jan 2024. The initial checking was done by the National Monitoring Committee (NMC), who particularly checked on my work experience and asked for further details but did not have any concerns with my IEng registration with IET. After obtaining confirmation of my documents about my work experience on the 16th of January, the Engineering Council then asked me to make the payment for the application and waited for the results. The Engineering Council got back to me on the 7th of Feb that my application had been successful.

I did not have to attend an interview, either online or in person. However, I did provide evidence of work-based learning although it’s not mandatory for my application since I meet the academic requirements. I'm grateful that the whole process only took a month.

I hope this will be a great help for future EUR ING applicants. Thank You!
