Change of career which is not engineering related, should i keep IET membership and how?

Hello All Engineer,

I am seeking some pointer and direction about keeping my IET membership.

Recently due to personal calling, i decided to switch my career from engineering to administration role. I done this purely of my believe in the state of mental health of many people in UK and the world. In fact, our next major event was to openly talk about death, which is to my surpise, no one (organisation or not) wants to talk about it. My role now is making sure the charity provide meditation, retereat and open space activities to help people in this unfamiliar subject. It is a charity and I am volunteerin without pay. I do not see myself going back in Engineering, but engineering will be a hobby rather then a job. The other reason was, none of the charity or any body that I am working with will be interested to sponsor with anything I have about engineering. Hence the question, should i even keep my IET membership?

  • Hello AMK, most mental issues are related to mental health and how well we are train to manage it. In fact we know very little about our own mental health other then we believe it have to do with outside our mind. Hence, for us, we try to teach meditation as a means to get stronger mentally to manage our mental state. Just like we go to the gym to train our physical strength, we need meditation/concentraion to train mental strength. It does not matter what kind it is, what is relevent to your question will be any kind that helps in that training, and whatever kind it maybe it would be better then none at all. As for death awareness, again, it does not matter what forms it takes, as long as it is openly discussed it is a good start. I suggest if you are interested, speak to anyone with authority, be it a religious setup or not, ask them to make an open forum and be open to have a cuppa and talk about it. If they are not comfortable to do so, you would need to find those that would. I hope I answer your questions.

  • Yes thanks. What has helped with my own struggles is trying to be grateful for the present moment, and accepting the impermanence of life. I think it’s important to openly discuss these things, as you said.
