Guidance on Development Action Plan for IEng Application

Dear Community,

I am in the process of preparing my IEng application and although the Development Action Plan (DAP) is optional, I would like to include one in my submission to demonstrate my commitment to continuous professional development.

I would be grateful if anyone could share guidance or examples of what should be incorporated in a strong DAP. In particular, I am keen to understand how best to structure it and the type of development goals (technical, management, leadership, or professional) that assessors find most relevant.

Any advice, examples, or personal experiences would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support.

  • Whilst they might not be required any more, I'll still be suggesting that applicants complete one for themselves.

Firstly it forces them to THINK, which makes things much easier when at interview, and when preparing their application.

Secondly I suggest they split the 'plan' into two parts:

    • those that are for the benefit of their employer (usually already part of annual surveys etc), and
    • those action plans that are for themselves.

This gives the applicants a better chance of integrating their thinking into the application!

I have a recollection that there is something asked at Interview, even if they don't need to submit the DAP.
