Guidance on Development Action Plan for IEng Application

Dear Community,

I am in the process of preparing my IEng application and although the Development Action Plan (DAP) is optional, I would like to include one in my submission to demonstrate my commitment to continuous professional development.

I would be grateful if anyone could share guidance or examples of what should be incorporated in a strong DAP. In particular, I am keen to understand how best to structure it and the type of development goals (technical, management, leadership, or professional) that assessors find most relevant.

Any advice, examples, or personal experiences would be very much appreciated.

Thank you in advance for your support.

  • And, if you can, get a PRA or a good supporter to 'challenge' you on the DAP to make sure that it comes across well (is_understandable) and actually reflects your desired development Grin

Talking to another real person is far more use that frustratedly talking to yourself and a computer screen Scream

  • Thank you for clarifying. I believe it is worthwhile to submit my DAP, as it can add value to my application and demonstrate my commitment to CPD

  • Hi David,

Thanks for that, that's helpful insight. If you have time it would be really useful if you could join the discussion on the Registration and Standards Forum. If you haven't seen it already, you'll see why I suggest that when you see the discussion so far on DAP in the context of the assessment of CPD.

    Thanks,

    Andy

  • As a pre-interview assessor/moderator, if there is a DAP with the application I will always look at it and comment if it seems appropriate and helpful.  It is my understanding that at the interview the DAP will be discussed in the context of continuing professional development (CPD), which is a sub-competence that is assessed.

  • I have a recollection that there is something asked at Interview

Absolutely, the advice we have been given is:

"The DAP will be discussed at Interview through a question."

    Thanks, Andy

  • Ah, the joys of the accountability diagram, copied from some corporate org chart that had zero relevance for the applicants day to day interactions and how 'authority' flowed. Lots of dashed and dotted lines to show real interactions wrt engineering responsibility, and UKU.

  • Whilst they might not be required any more, I'll still be suggesting that applicants complete one for themselves.

Firstly it forces them to THINK, which makes things much easier when at interview, and when preparing their application.

Secondly I suggest they split the 'plan' into two parts:

    • those that are for the benefit of their employer (usually already part of annual surveys etc), and
    • those action plans that are for themselves.

This gives the applicants a better chance of integrating their thinking into the application!

I have a recollection that there is something asked at Interview, even if they don't need to submit the DAP.

  • Thank you very much for clarifying this point. If the DAP is no longer regarded as an important part of the application, I will not include it in my application. I’m truly grateful to you and Gerard for your guidance, this really helps me move forward with more confidence.

  • Hi,

I've asked the question internally as clearly Gerard and I have a different understanding of this, I thought they were still being looked at. But Gerard knows his stuff so is very likely to be correct.

Accountability diagrams have definitely been removed thank goodness, they really weren't adding any value.

    Thanks,

    Andy

  • You are right Gerard, the accountability diagram has been removed from the application. However, I noticed that the DAP is still available as an optional element. Do you have any idea why the IET has kept it as optional if it does not really add value to the assessment process?
