Could someone confirm or correct me and direct me to the source of the information.
Mains supply voltage in the UK should be 230V -6%+10%
Mains supply voltage in the rest of Europe is 230V -10%+6%
From 2003 both standards will be harmonised to 230V -10%+10%
Do the same limits apply to high voltage customers.

Please refer to the information given in the Building Electrical Technology PN discussion forum.

  • Yes - I think you've got that right and they are spelled out in the Electricity Supply Regulations - a Statutory Instrument available on HMSO website. The values for HV are +/- 6% up to 132kV when it becomes +/- 10%.

I believe you're right too about the harmonization date, but I'm not sure that the UK will fall in with this.

What it really means is that new equipment will have to work satisfactorily on a range of voltages from 207V (230-10%) to 253V (230+10%) but that the RECs don't actually have to change anything. Incandescent lamps will still be different for different countries/areas - as they are now.

According to the current Electricity Supply Regulations, and the draft of The Electricity Safety, Quality and Continuity Regulations 2001, the limits for HV supplies in the UK are

    132-400kV plus or minus 10%
below 132kV plus or minus 6%
