drowning in paper

    Hi,

Moving on from the topic of the IEE Recruitment printed section and whether it should be circulated to everyone... I currently have copies of the IEE Review and Electonics & Communications magazine going back for quite a few years now. I'm drowning in paper! Could the IEE look into providing us with CDs of magazine back issues or making them available in .pdf format to download ? I know some articles are placed into the library but not all. Since we are an engineering organisation can't we take the lead in providing useful infomation in an efficient format ? Where has the paperless office gone ?

  • I agree. And why do the magazines include fax-back enquiry forms. Surely it's time we consigned fax machines to museums? Nearly everything is avialable electronically, and that which isn't can be scanned.

I've just got the PEJ today. There are about three really good letters in it. Why didn't they appear in these forums instead?

I think we've a way to go yet, nil desparandum!

i support your ponit however i believe this should be left as an option as i know some who aren't chanced to go online often and prefer to read the mags (paper) than obtaining one. You are right though, we should be leaders in and through leadership can only be seen in the management of information.

Thanks for your observations. We believe that the majority of IEE members do still prefer to read substantive material on paper (i.e. in magazine format) rather than receive it online. That was certainly the strong message from a major survey of members in summer 2000, where the preference for paper (vs. online) was overwhelming. Obviously the trend may well be towards online as time progresses.

Much of the content of the IEE Review and the six Engineering Journals is now provided online within the growing Professional Networks, but we do not currently offer to members an online equivalent of each Engineering Journal. We are monitoring member feedback on this as part of a review of our publishing for members.

Certainly we could consider making a searchable archive of pdf files of these publications either on CD or as an online archive. Would you pay extra for that or expect it free in addition to the printed magazines?

If you find a letter in PEJ, or another publication, which you think will stimulate interest and discussion in one of these Forums, by all means make that suggestion to the appropriate PN Manager and/or Exec Team. My staff colleagues looking after the PN web areas are trying hard to populate them with good content, but they may simply miss things we publish in other areas. Your help in this will always be appreciated.

  • I do like the ease of use of the present method.

Though I would like to be able to download back issues from a searchable libary at a small charge.

I do keep my back issues for some time in anticipation of going back to them to find a snippet of information, but in reality what happens is that I turf them all out every 2 years, when the spare study/bedroom becomes more like the junk room!
