  • Could I suggest looking at the following link for a start ?

    www.nrpb.org/.../mobile_phones.htm

NRPB tend to provide the 'official' line for non-ionising radiation safety but an internet search will probably produce many conflicting views as to what is 'safe'.

If this is not your normal field though and given the emotions raised by mast siting issues in general maybe the best advice could be not to get involved ??

As already suggested the place to find advice about mobile phone base station radiation and health/safety is the National Radiological Protection Board, for example see: -

    www.nrpb.org/.../press_release_6_00.htm

However, again as already advised, the issues concerning all forms of low level radiation and “safety” are often ‘emotional’ rather than technical, and are best left to experts.

For ten years the IEE have had an advisory group of UK experts consider low level electromagnetic fields and possible health issues. The group’s advice formulates IEE’s policy on the topic. This policy is set out in a Position Statement that is updated every two years. The current Statement, May 2002, can be found at: -

    www.iee.org/.../POSTAT02final.pdf

The IEE has also issued an explanatory booklet that gives guidance, for example, as to the meaning of terminology used in the subject of electromagnetic radiation and health. This can be found at: -

    www.iee.org/.../emfhealth.pdf

In recent correspondence with the IEE’s expert group they have made the observation that the subject of electromagnetic fields and health is a complex one, and whilst, in the last decade, world-wide hundreds of millions of pounds have been spent investigating the subject, so far very few definitive answers have been found.

The government through its Mobile Telecommunications & Health Research Programme (MTHR) is making a further major investment in trying to find the answers to the publics’ concerns. This programme will last a number of years. In the meantime we all have to live with a degree of uncertainty.

To all who replied to this Topic.

Thank you for your helpful comments. I will pass the basic theme to my neighbour and I am sure he will be reassured by you. This is indeed more an emotional than scientific debate, particularly as our responsible tabloids often choose to use the word radiation to describe the transmissions. I beleive as engineers we should take every opportunity to put truth into the public arena and that is what I will now do with the infomation supplied.

Once again, thank you for taking the time to respond.

    Jim Phillips.
