As already suggested the place to find advice about mobile phone base station radiation and health/safety is the National Radiological Protection Board, for example see: -
However, again as already advised, the issues concerning all forms of low level radiation and “safety” are often ‘emotional’ rather than technical, and are best left to experts.
For ten years the IEE have had an advisory group of UK experts consider low level electromagnetic fields and possible health issues. The group’s advice formulates IEE’s policy on the topic. This policy is set out in a Position Statement that is updated every two years. The current Statement, May 2002, can be found at: -
The IEE has also issued an explanatory booklet that gives guidance, for example, as to the meaning of terminology used in the subject of electromagnetic radiation and health. This can be found at: -
In recent correspondence with the IEE’s expert group they have made the observation that the subject of electromagnetic fields and health is a complex one, and whilst, in the last decade, world-wide hundreds of millions of pounds have been spent investigating the subject, so far very few definitive answers have been found.
The government through its Mobile Telecommunications & Health Research Programme (MTHR) is making a further major investment in trying to find the answers to the publics’ concerns. This programme will last a number of years. In the meantime we all have to live with a degree of uncertainty.
