I'm an electrical building services engineer. I wish to rejoin a membership. Below are my options:-

MCIBSE: GBP240

MIET: GBP148

FSOE: GBP135

MIHEEM: GBP122

MIEEE: US$152

In terms of cost, IET seems not the best choice. I'm puzzled whether I should try something new. Any opinion is welcome.
  • The choice is best not determined by cost. Whichever is relevant and offers the knowledge and network related to your current work will be a good choice.

    Chris,

But, it seems all institutions are related to my current post!
  • If that is the case I suggest you stick to IET even though you may have to pay more on subscription fees.

I joined IEE as AMIEE in 1995. As I'm an electrical building services engineer, I felt that IEE was suitable for me. But, after IEE become IET in 2006. I felt that IET became less relevant. My current role is in operation & maintenance field. I feel that I should try some other institutions as I feel that the E&T magazines are not relevant to electrical engineers anymore. I have read the magazines of other institutions and I feel that they are more interesting and relevant for me. I don't have too much extra money to pay for all memberships, so I should be wise enough to select the best to suit me in my circumstances. Are there any members out there have similar feelings? Welcome to share!
  • You may try Chartered Association of Building Engineers, a Professional Affiliates to ECUK. www.cbuilde.com

I do agree with you that it is difficult to look for a institution that is core based in Electrical.

Even IEEE is more to electronic/IT stuff if your read their magazine.

  • You need to think about what your priorities are. The content of the institution’s magazine probably isn’t a good guide and you can gain access to anything via the right library (such as The IET). If you want to meet with other engineers in your locality, go on visits or participate in events, these are often shared. Is professional registration of value to you?

Are you aware of the “Wiring Matters” section of the IET Website and Magazine aimed at electrical contracting. If you dig a little deeper there are many resources on Electrical Power Engineering and IET is clearly the natural home for engineers of this persuasion (my own background). I later also worked for a business with close CIBSE connections and they produce an impressive range of good quality information and guidance. Their “American Cousin” is ASHRAE since historically CIBSE is “mechanical”, although their material on lighting is as good as any, with electrical coverage sufficient for most building services engineers, since the UK national standards for buildings are set by IET anyway. On the minor negative side (in the UK at least) it is “consultant dominated” (rather than contractors or O&M engineers) and Incorporated Engineer is aligned with associate membership (like the AMIEE you held) although you can get MCIBSE without being Chartered.

I can’t comment on IEEE because I have no experience, but the other UK based bodies you mention are quite small and limited in capability. For me it would be a straight choice between IET & CIBSE. IET is bigger, broader, stronger (especially in electrical engineering generally) and more inclusive in attitude, but CIBSE has much to commend it and might be a good option for you.
