Is IET suitable for Mechanical Engineers?

I have a friend who has a BEng(Hons) and MSc in Mechanical Engineering.

I told him IET may suit him.

He told me IET is for Electrical Engineers.

I told him IET is Institution of Engineering and Technology, IET is multi-disciplines.

He still not believe it.

What should I tell him?

As a boiler installation engineer, can I participate as a mechanical engineer within the IET?
  • Hello Edvin

Yes, you may join the IET as it is a multidisciplinary organisation.

    Good Luck

Yes, when you make CEng application, you need to select discipline to be registered.

Thank you guys. Is there any cost to the CEng application? I have already registered as a member to this forum, is there another registtration?

Which discipline would I have to select if I am a boiler engineer working with such manufacturers as Vaillant, Ideal and Worcester Boilers

    Thanks again. :)

  • The answers so far have assumed that you aspire to Chartered Engineer.

You need to examine UK-SPEC and compare what you do with the competence and qualification benchmarks described. There are three potential categories to consider Technician, Chartered and Incorporated. The term “Boiler Engineer” is very elastic and you could fall into any one of these categories, or if you cannot demonstrate knowledge at “level 3” (NVQ, C&G, ONC, or international equivalents) below the threshold for registration. Even in that situation you are of course warmly welcome to contribute to the IET and make use of its benefits.

    Yes.

First, you have to pay to be a member of one of the engineering institutions.

Then you have to pay to apply for professional registration.

If you are accepted, you have to pay again to be put on the register.

Then the continuing registration fee is added to your yearly membership of the institution.
