EN 60204 and protective conductors

I've asked this question elsewhere with no luck!

In EN 60204-1:2009 it says regarding the sizing of protective conductors (8.2.2): "This requirement is met in most cases where the relationship between the cross-sectional area of the phase conductors associated with that part of the equipment and the cross sectional area of the associated protective conductor is in accordance with Table 1" The phrase "associated with that part of the equipment" I take to mean that if, for example, I have a 24V PSU inside my cabinet fed by 1.5mm conductors and appropriately fused, the protective conductor to the PSU can also be 1.5mm, even if the incoming conductors are much bigger.


In EN 60204-1:2018 we are again referred to table 1, but the "associated" statement has gone. Table 1 deals with the sizing of the external protective conductor. Does this mean that all protective conductors inside the enclosure should be sized relative to the incoming phase conductors? To start with they would be too large for the earth terminal on my PSU!  Clearly there is a reason why this wording has changed, but what is the difference in application?

    Yes it does Alasdair, but 5.2 is "Terminal for connection of the external protective conductor". The whole paragraph relates to the incoming supply. Now 8.2.2. is to do with the internal protective conductors, so we may perhaps assume that since we are now clearly using Table 1 for a different purpose than the paragraph it appears in, the related line conductors are different as well.  I'm just concerned that I have to make this assumption when the previous version of the standard stated it clearly.

    I did read that paragraph but the diagram (in section 8) seemed to clearly show the "protective conductor" as being the PE Earth bus within the enclosure (which is connected to the external protective conductor) and had wired earth connections which were not called "protective conductors" connecting individual items to this. It looks as if I am reading the standard differently from yourself.

    As this is to do with an interpretation of the standard I would suggest your best avenue is to approach the BSI committee which is the UK National Committee participating in the CENELEC and IEC committees preparing this standard and ask them the question.

    I would read 8.2.2 as follows.

    1. Calculate in accordance with 543.1.2 of IEC 60364 (BS 7671 will be basically identical, as the regulation number in BS 7671 is identical and is not a .100 (EN), or .200 (UK) clause.

    2. Select the size from Table 1, which just happens to be located in clause 5.2, and can be used as a stand alone table for reference in it's own right.


    Table 1 is basically a cut down version of table 54.7 in BS 7671 (IEC 60364).

    I will be continuing on as per the 2006/9 version of 60204 regardless of this change in wording, and I will be advising any clients the same.


    Remember, BS 7671, IEC 60364, & IEC 60204-1 all have the same purpose.and IEC 61140 is the document setting out many of the underpinning requirements.
