Elderly drivers could stay on road longer using simple in-car tech

Interesting article on E&T today about keeping older drivers on the road for longer by using driver assist technologies.

Excellent idea I think as it would help our older citizens to retain a greater amount of independence. However, I'm also of the personal opinion that drivers should be re-tested every 10 years as a matter of course, to weed out those bad habits we all fall into.

Excellent Idea - if it could disable the vehicles until say 09.30 and before 16.30 Monday to Friday to keep them out of the way of everyone else, that would be grand.

If it could also be extended to supermarkets generally and have an additional lunchtime slot for sandwich bars specifically, that would be even better.

  • Bad habits creep in during the first few years after passing the driving test, as drivers become more confident. Then habits tend to stick unless corrected. My idea would be to have a second driving three to five years after the first. This would correct  bad  habits.

I don't see how a retest for drivers over 70 would achieve anything. I would support the idea of a compulsory eye test and medical every three years, rather than self-certification as at  present.
  • Following OMS ban on specific places, fit to all cars and ban from schools from 8.00 am till 9.00 am, and 2.30 pm till 4.00 pm.
