Experience between submitting and interview

I have my CEng interview coming up this month. Since submitting my application (actually while I was on Shared Parental Leave) and now I've changed rolls and am doing a lot more 'C' competencies that my interviewers will be particularly focusing on.


Is it reasonable to include recent experience that isn't covered in my application form, perhaps in my presentation, or should I stick to the snapshot in time that is on my application form?

    Your presentation just needs to demonstrate your understanding, in depth, of your chosen subject. I always recommend that you should be able to discuss every aspect in depth.

    The interviewers are not going to try and catch you out - often we don’t have full familiarity of a presentation subject and just want to know, your response just reinforces your competence.

    I suggest you get a colleague who is familiar with the subject to quiz you on it - that may help settle your nerves when you get there and may lead you to amend bits and pieces.

    The subject doesn’t have to have been included in your application but should be fairly recent - that way it should be fresh in your memory banks.

  • You can let staff know of any job change before the interview as a heads up for the interviewers, I would tend to say mention it in the interview and perhaps prepare a few examples that show how you have developed since you changed role and use these in your examples.

    Hi Mark,


    I was in a similar position very recently where for multiple reasons (also including parenthood!) I ended up with two years between submission and interview and had had a major change in responsibility in that period. I drew up a 'career update' covering two sides (if there hasn't been a major role change I imagine this would be somewhat shorter) which included relevant updates for the various types of information which were on the main form and in a similar layout such as:
    • a summary of the change/new role,

    • responsibilities,

    • personal achievement,

    • training,

    • professional services, papers & presentations and

    • accountability diagram


    I e-mailed this to the IET along with my presentation and DAP a couple of days before the interview and took along four paper copies. (Presumably your interview will be online so you might want to make sure the IET have passed the eletronic ones on to interviewers in advance.) My impression is that this was seen as a reasonable approach - they do want to know about changes and this seemed like a succinct way of conveying them. Aspects from this update were drawn into discussion when they arose naturally so I don't think you need to shoehorn them into your presentation, you can just consider the presentation in its own right as to how you want to convey the A&B examples that suit you, which may or may not include recent activity.
