SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND?

Sorry Zoom if I am treading on your toes.

What are we going to do this weekend?

In my younger days the term
    "SOMETHING FOR THE WEEKEND?"

was a phrase used when you went to the barbers( aka Hairdresser)  of a Friday and he asked you if you needed

Was that a packet of three sir?

  • "Do we need to run  on-line quiz or bingo for electrical types. "

Good idea MAPJ1 , lets get Zoomy to start it and we can all chuck some ideas at him too
  • I have just had my third lockdown haircut by my wife, without the offer of something for the weekend.
  • Electric Scissors sparking, buy her some, it`s only fair

How often did you have your hair cut?

  • I eventually got my dad to explain why the barber asked some customers if they wanted something for the weekend.

It also took me a long time to get him to explain what the hand painted sign in the hedge just along the lane from the Feckenham National Grid sub station meant “J donkey at stud”.

    1) four electric heaters each of 2.4Kw at 230 volts, are connected to the same ring final circuit. How long will it take for the MCB to trip at an actual supply voltage of 220 volts, and at 250 volts.

    2) What is an average loading for a cannabis farm. How many may be connected to the same substation before the DNO notice.

    3) Are night lights and electric heaters in a babies room exempted from rota power cuts.

    4) Why do the internal lights in a bus still work in a power cut.

    Ans 1.

At 220 Volts the tripping time assuming a 32 Amp type B M.C.B. is infinity seconds. Or until the credit runs out in the meter.

At 250 Volts the current being approx. 45.5 Amps it is just on the tripping time line of plus 10,000 S. So it may not trip at all, and if so it will take a very long time indeed. Hours, days, weeks, years. It may be dependant on manufacturing tolerances, temperature or the X factor.

  • Q2 The cannabis farm. Well if it is wired in like this one, about 200A ..

Rather him than me with the hacksaw on the 185mm main. Cross drilling a hole in the cable to attach a draw line is new one on me though.

I'll leave the remaining questions to others.
  • Hah, so that is why canabis is so dangerous! it`s the sawing thru a big live cable that puts you at risk.

Actually, unbeknown to me, A consumer unit I updated from an existing council house installation was used to provide a circuit in the loft for a canabis farm. Word got back to me that one copper in particular was adamant that the consumer unit was done by the installer (me) in such a way that it was obvious it was to be used for such (obviously he had never seen an updated CU and isolators for outside shed supply) . He insisted the local lektrik board came an investigated it. When the boards inspector reported to him that it was a good decent modern install he was quite deflated

A really interesting video Mike. I watched part 1 and part 2 and have missed my breakfast because of it. Thanks, it was informative and enjoyable.
