Professional Registration Application - Accountability Diagrams

Hi,

I was hoping someone could provide some guidance or suggestions concerning the accountability diagrams for the CEng Application Form.

Firstly, my organisation is international in nature and operates a matrix based structure. We have two possible accountability "streams": geographical and technical.

Geographical would best be described as the more traditional structure and is the part of the organisation that is contained within a particular geographical location or department e.g. I would be accountable to my line manager, my line manager accountable to the department head, department head accountable to country manager, etc.

Technical would best be described as across the technical areas of the organisation i.e. I would be accountable to my line manager, line manager is accountable to the technical head, technical head is accountable to technical director, etc.

What do you recommend is the best way of dealing with this situation? Should I use the geographical (traditional) accountability structure or the technical?

Secondly, and unfortunately, I sit at the "bottom" of the matrix structure and therefore, it is difficult for me to demonstrate two levels of accountability below me. I have two distinct levels above me in the traditional, geographical stream (line manager and department head).

To demonstrate levels "below" me, I feel I would have to describe colleagues from across the technical parts of the organisation (i.e. expert/HQ technical support that I can request technical queries, work packages, etc, who could then be described as "accountable" to me) or external to the organisation (i.e. sub contractors or suppliers, who could also be described as "accountable" to me).

Do you have any suggestions as to how to deal with this?

Look forward to your response!

Graeme.

  • Graeme,

You could include both a geographical and technical organisation chart if this explains your role more easily; if you are using Career Manager you would need to ensure these are in one file but you can upload more than one.

In terms of levels "below" you this could be those that you are requesting work from who are accountable to you, you would just need to make it clear who they are and what the relationship with.  You could also explain this more in your Career History to make it clear where you have leadership experience in this role.

I'm sure that other members may have experience of this sort of situation, so you may get some additional advice from PRAs or those who have gone through the process.

    Kind Regards,

  • Hi Kathryn,

Thanks for your response - very helpful!

On that basis, how complex should the accountability diagram be? For example, I understand most people tend towards the traditional five box stack, with their role in middle and two levels above and two levels below. However, my role would be better explained by showing the wider organisation and indicating the links back to my role. This type of accountability diagram becomes rather more complex, with a larger number of boxes! Is this likely to be acceptable?

    Thanks again!

  • Graeme,

I would recommend that you include all of those that are relevant to your application, if this is more complex than the simpler five boxes (2 above/2 below) then I would suggest you use this and include those that are specifically related to your most recent role.

I would also suggest that you speak to a PRA before you submit the final application, to get clarification.

    Regards

    Kathryn
  • Hi Kathry,

That's great, thanks again! I have an interview with a PRA in a couple of weeks, so I will see what he says too!

    Thanks!

Just a quick addition to Kathryn's advice. The idea of the organagram is to give the Assessors an idea of where you are positioned in the Company you work for, i,e your resposibility, your peers and the reporting structure. It should not be overcomplicated (it has to be read and understood), also you will note that we request that colour is used sparingly if at all, because it will be photocopied in black & white!

    Hope that helps
