Information submitted on IEng/CEng application form

According to Section K, submitted information is shared with local networks, presumably on the basis of stated home address. Why is it not also shared with technical networks? It would be a real boost, in serving a widely dispersed group of members, if we also could obtain more insight into the members we are supposed to serve!

I suggest that (for example) the application forms of all members listing Tribology as a specialism would be automatically shared with the committee of the Tribology TPN.

(Presumably the local networks receive anonymised information and therefore, TPNs could do the same.)

Knowledge is valuable...! We should automatically recognise that fact as a "learned society".
  • As Chairman of the Cambridge LN, I have never seen or received application forms or been notified of new members joining the LN.  Because of data protection requirements it is a challenge to learn the names and contact details of members unless there is a specific need.

Be interesting to learn from a relevant staff member as to the application of the clause referred to in section K.
  • As Chairman of the Cambridge LN, I have never been copied or seen any IEng/CEng applications in any format.  Data protection requirements make it difficult to find the names and contact details of members unless there is a speciifc requirement.

Be interesting to learn from a staff member what the application is of the clause referred to in section K.
  • I'm a member of this community and am also a little confused why have recieved this email .

    Clarification would be useful

  • Legh,

I am asking the question for three reasons: I try to read the small print before signing forms, as a TPN volunteer I'm looking for ways to improve our effectiveness, and as a CEng candidate I am following one of the suggested actions under competence E1 of UK-SPEC. I believe that email notification of discussion postings can be switched off but I'm not the right person to advise how.
  • Hello everyone

I thought it might be helpful to clarify a few points:

    • Application information from professional registration candidates in never shared with LNs or TPNs.

    • What used to happen was that LNs received information about new members who had joined from their LN area, and they were encouraged to contact the new members directly to welcome them along to an LN event and make them feel welcome. We haven’t been able to share data directly in this way for some time, but all new members are automatically added to the circulation lists and receive the promotional information that is sent out by email about LN activities.

    • It is now possible for LNs to send direct email communication to members in their area via our Adestra email system, and we have talked about setting up a mechanism whereby the direct message to new members could be reintroduced.

    • With regards to people interested in a particular technical area of specialism, people are encouraged to update their preferences via MyIET, anyone who ticks the Tribology box here will receive promotional information about the Tribology community and your activities.

    • If there is particular information that any LN or TPN would like about members in their respective areas ( be it geographic or technical) then talk to your staff contact and we will do all we can to help. We can provide analysis reports for you, we just can't hand over contact data (for obvious data protection reasons), but let us know what you'd like to know or achieve and we'll work with you to try and work out the best solution.I hope this helps

PS: Legh - if you click the 'settings' icon towards the top right of this screen you can manage your subscriptions. I'm guessing you've received an email alert about this thread as one of the boxes in this area has been checked.
  • Alex,

Thanks for the feedback.  When time permits a review of the declaration at box K would be helpful.

On an ancillary subject, Cambridge has approx 950 recipients of the Adestra emails and I understand around 2500 members.  I assume other LNs and groups have a similar disparity.  Can anything be done to advise members of the relevance of the boxes they tick under preferences?

    Hi David

Those figures dont quite tally with the information I have. But this discussion is going a little off topic so I will pick this up with you on email.

  • Alex,

Thanks for the information. Much clearer now.
