''Today's engineers have to interact with a far broader range of contacts than their predecessors. The ability to convey complex solutions, enthuse funding partners and work closely with non-engineering specialists is becoming a daily requirement, fuelling the need for excellent communicators''

The Guardian

Would you agree with this statement?  If so, would you benefit from your organisation running soft-skills courses such as; leadership, communication, confidence, assertiveness and negotiation?

I would be interested to see your comments.
  • I'm retired now and only occasionally lurk here. How sad that this post has been on here for over two months without reply.

I agree with the conclusion but not the premise. Engineers have always needed these skills but were generally not taught them. It was the lack of these skills which generally consigned engineers to the 'back room' to be used as a means to an end by the management.

Only those engineers who had already gained these skills from school or a mentor (if they were lucky enough to get one) could progress into positions of real influence. I succeeded in getting this training only late in my career when it had stagnated, but the difference was palpable even then.

So yes, the sooner the better.
