A recent survey of employees working in UK SMEs, undertaken by BreatheHR, found that 47% of respondents feel their personal development isn’t taken seriously by their employer. http://www.breathehr.com/resources/hr-software-white-papers/personal-development-workplace-survey

What is your experience of employer support for your professional development? Is it different for those working in SME’s to those in larger organisations? Do those just starting out in their career get more support than those who are more experienced? Is it down to the individual to drive their own development, anyway? What do you think?
  • My company, Elekta Limited, is very supportive. They push for all R&D employees to be registered. Gaining CEng is rewarded with an instant salary award, and all fees are paid for. Couldn't really ask for more.
  • Wearing both hats, as employer and engineer, I know how important CPD is for getting the work done, but don't value it especially highly for its own sake.
