This is a few months old but i've just read about Swindon’s £10m university technical college, which would be for 14 to 19-year-oldswho would access high-quality education and training, supported by a range of partners including local companies.

What a great initiative, has anyone been involved?

  • These new University Technical Colleges are really taking off.  The Dorset & South Wiltshire Network are planning to work with  Salisbury College with a view to providing guest speakers at key lecture, sponsoring joint events and awarding Student Excellence prizes.

I know it’s a little early to start promoting our events before they go to print, but our next seasons event schedule (Oct 13 - Jul 14) we have a joint presentation from the UTC presenters to be confirmed.

A brief synopsis and a early heads up to all that are interested in what the UTC will offer potential students in and around Swindon and what parents can expect; “University Technical College (UTC) Swindon is an exciting new concept in education that aims to develop the engineering talent of the future. Scheduled to open in September 2014, the UTE will take students from age 14 to 19 and will focus on engineering and enterprise. Adopting a “hand and mind” approach, learners will follow a curriculum that is designed and led by local employers. UTC sponsors Johnson Matthey Fuel Cells and Oxford Brookes University will present the latest developments in this vital initiative.”

To be presented Tuesday 14 January 2014 – this is to present to potential students and parents to what the UTC can offer.

Please feel free to add this to your diary and spread the word – further announcements will be on our events page in due time.

Sounds like a great event! I look forward to learning more in the future.
  • I just want to echo Mubbisher's comments with regards to our Committee's continued active engagement during the ongoing establishment of the Swindon UTC (noting their website has had a recent overhaul). For instance, through this involvement we were invited and then attended the recent social event midway through the prospective Principal candidates interview selection two day assessment process. This provided a great opportunity to highlight the work of the IET to the candidates and also the current supporters of the Swindon UTC. Going forward, we aim to further build our relationship with the Swindon UTC on a local level and also to explore further opportunities for extending that to include the IET as a whole. We’ve already initiated such discussions within the IET, but further suggestions and ideas for collaboration are welcome.
