Let's talk about succession planning

I've created this discussion thread to give you the opportunity to either ask questions, or share your experiences around succession planning. As staff we try to do our best to provide you with useful information in order to support you in your roles as IET volunteers, but in some cases volunteers will inevitably benefit more by talking to other volunteers.



I will ask a question just to get the ball rolling:



What do you find most challenging about succession planning?


 
  • Naturally, we get trampled in the stampede when we seek volunteers ;-)
  • Having been involved in several voluntary organisations, succession planning is a non-topic really. You can 't plan with what you don't have, so in my experience, you either have the ideal successor in the volunteer pool - and things go fine. Or you don't and no amount of planning will produce one. Things normally work themselves out one way or another, but sometimes not without pain and disruption to the organisation. Often, appeals for help go unanswered until there is literally no option other than to close down the activity in question. Then you really find out whether the activity is valued by the members. If it is, someone steps forward.
  • Thanks John F. I've been contemplating a post here but could not reach the best words to explain my observations on the volunteer communities which I am familiar with. Now having read your post I am pleased that I no longer have to think about posting as you have crystallised my observations and experience. I could not agree more with your sentiments. "volunteer" and "planning" by definition do not coexist well together. Adding things like succession or contingency into the mix makes a difficult requirements set.
  • Yes, Secretary and Treasurer are important continuity roles, involving a lot of knowledge and experience, whereas Chair is more of a figurehead role. Still, 21 years is an impressive achievement.
