What do you want from the IoT TPN?

The IoT TPN is still developing and we'd love to hear your ideas on what you want the TPN to do or get involved in?

► What hot topics should we be involved in?

► Are there gaps in IoT that the TPN should cover?

► What activities could the TPN put on?

Any thoughts would be welcome!

In my view, a good way to identify any gaps that may exist in the IoT TPN is by looking at the building blocks that make up an IoT system/platform. Once identified, look at what these 'blocks' contain and check what the IoT TPN has covered (or covering) against what is missing.

However, as the IoT is a system/platform that covers just about anything under the umbrella of engineering and IT it is no easy task!

What may alleviate some of the task is the vast amount of work and research done over the last few years from a range of organisations around the world (educational institutions/universities, vendors, industry) that is widely accessible. Reviewing and pulling together all relevant research on standards and frameworks may be a good starting point.

  • Thanks Athanasios Baoustanos‍ it's true that IoT covers a vast array of topics - I think narrowing that down is one of the biggest challenges that the TPN faces!
  • As an embedded developer getting into secure IoT communications, I'm seeing a huge expertise shortage in this area. Some very clever tiny devices to aid secure implementation, and a lot of vague talk about the need for cyber security, but very little in depth expertise. A number of silicon vendors have great little devices, for example Atmel, and people like Amazon are putting in place the cloud aspect, but as for training courses and application engineers able to support these developments, things are very thin. It would be nice to see the IET champion some practical hands-on embedded IoT security events.
  • Thanks Alex Barrett‍ security surrounding IoT is a real hot topic at the moment!
  • Well yes, lots of people are pointing out the need, but there is little evidence of anything more than this. Maybe the IET can run some embedded crypto events, covering the whole ecosystem from IoT node through to a cloud host such as Amazon Web Services? The only decent course I've seen is run by Hitex in Coventry.
  • Thanks for sharing Christopher Shire‍ looks interesting!
