Yes, we had power cuts in the 70's and used voltage reduction at first as a 10% reduction would give a 20% reduction in power if you lock all the 11kV tap-changers. In reality, I think we got about 15% which is extremely useful if the wind stops blowing.
I suppose another reduction could be made by asking all those essential services who have standby generators to run them and not switch back to the grid until the supply normalised. Possibly, all data centres, hospitals and 24 hour processing plants could be advised in advance of load shedding schedule.
Long term we need nuclear and all existing stations should be refurbished or restarted as soon as practically possible.
