PETER HITCHENS: Just like the Reds, Greens think they're too nice to be wrong | Daily Mail Online
Z.
He is not wrong. It is time to face facts and see that we are heading in the wrong direction.
He mentions by next Autumn we'll start to feel the harsh realities of the UK's energy policy.
As Putin starts to squeeze the gas supply, it's the inevitable.
I already have a log burner, and logs for two years.
And a few thousand candles.
And oil lamps with a few hundred liters of oil, and battery lanterns with 100 D cells.
Also a UPS for essential loads [some lighting, internet router, fridge, cordless phone base unit] Run time many hours.
And long underwear and warm blankets.
A very much doubt that prolonged power cuts will result from lack of generating capacity, but do consider that rota cuts at times of high demand are possible, for no more than three hours at a time. Plenty of opportunity to charge things overnight when the load is less.
A prolonged power cut could result from extreme weather, as occurred recently in the north east, one should be prepared for such events.
Everyone should be prepared for relatively short rota power cuts as occurred in the 1970s AND for the odd long term cut of 3 weeks in remote areas, or 3 days in urban areas.
Every year the tabloid press predict that it's going to be a bitterly cold winter. They also predict that we're going to get rolling power cuts as the electricity runs out.
Yes, we had power cuts in the 70's and used voltage reduction at first as a 10% reduction would give a 20% reduction in power if you lock all the 11kV tap-changers. In reality, I think we got about 15% which is extremely useful if the wind stops blowing.
I suppose another reduction could be made by asking all those essential services who have standby generators to run them and not switch back to the grid until the supply normalised. Possibly, all data centres, hospitals and 24 hour processing plants could be advised in advance of load shedding schedule.
Long term we need nuclear and all existing stations should be refurbished or restarted as soon as practically possible.
