  • Jon you’ve posted the link to YouTube as the post title which won’t behave as a hyperlink for people to click on. If you edit your post and change the title to something more explanatory and then add your link within the body text of your original post it would be more helpful Relaxed

  • Blimey. You Tube banned the video 90 minutes before show time.

What a marvelous world we live in.

  • The video can be viewed here should you wish to do so.

  • Sensible action for climate misinformation- maybe the IET should consider a similar policy to remove misinformation posts in EngX

  • I don't believe that the censorship you're proposing is in any way democratic. The IET is a platform for 'free speech'

and has been for as long as I can remember.

We all have to filter out misinformation on a daily basis. How can the IET possible filter out opinion fairly?

  • The IET is a platform for 'free speech'

and has been for as long as I can remember

It is?  The IET is a professional institution governed by a royal charter and a set of by-laws.  "Free speech" doesn't appear anywhere in those.

  • Absolutely.  Professional Engineers are also bound by codes of conduct which preclude spreading deliberate misinformation such as climate denial.
I would suggest the best thing is for engineers work together on trying to find solutions rather than denying the existence of the problem.

  • And so, because that posters here might not be members and so wouldn't be covered by the IET Rules of Conduct, the Rules and Guidelines for these forums in particular are clear (my emphasis):

    1. This online community is owned and operated by the IET. Users take part in the community by permission of the IET. That permission may be withdrawn at any time, at the sole discretion of the IET, and without further justification being necessary. In particular, forum posts and other content may be removed or accounts banned if, in the opinion of the moderators and/or Admins, this is in the best interests of technical and professional discussions in the forums.

I also find Point 4 relevant here - I am not aware that anyone making statements on this topic actually has any professional expertise in climate science:

    4. Messages, whether posted by IET members or other users, should comply with the relevant sections of the IET’s rules of conduct. This includes, but is not limited to, those rules that concern objectiveness, concern for the reputation of others, declaration of interest, and the making of statements outside one’s area of professional expertise. In the context of a discussion forum, this stipulation is not intended to prevent the offering of informal suggestions, provided that it is clear on what basis these are made. Under no circumstances may defamatory statements be made in these forums. The use of swearing, or of offensive language or links, will not be permitted under any circumstances.

    engx.theiet.org/.../community-rules-and-guidelines

What isn't in the rules and guidelines, but maybe should be, is that reference to evidence on matters of a scientific or technical nature should only be to peer reviewed research, published journals or similar material. As we'd expect as professionals. The problem is, this needs to be scalable to the seriousness of the issue - if we're discussing the best way to clean a distributer on an old MG (that was a different discussion on a different forum this weekend!) a link to a youtube video is perfectly reasonable. If it's a matter of life and death it's a different matter.

    And back to point 4:

...concern for the reputation of others...Under no circumstances may defamatory statements be made...

This includes showing respect for climate scientists as fellow professionals.

The IET is certainly a forum for open discussion for experts in their fields to freely present research that they have developed in the field of engineering and technology, and indeed to be involved in the peer review of that research (and hence question that research based on their own expertise in engineering and technology). As Jim says, we have freedom to debate HOW to develop and apply technology to solve the problems - because that's what we're professionals in.

  • I agree entirely Jim, instead of the constant and continuous debate on whether or not it exists we should be working together to provide solutions for the betterment of all inhabitants of this planet. Slight smile

  • No sensible person would admit that the climate isn't changing. (denial as you put it)

One degree in a century and more to come, That's where the engineering focus should be on adapting to a warming planet not on fixing a problem that may or may not be human caused. We do add CO2 to the atmosphere and yes it's a warming gas and contributes to the 'greenhouse effect', again no sensible person would deny that, man made CO2 will continue to rise as third world countries Westernise.

What's wrong is the UN's IPCC 'Policy for Summery' comes before the 'Scientific Reports' as Dr Judith Curry points out in her excellent video. In other words, the science is made to fit the policy creating the blind panic to reduce man made CO2 emissions based on the results from best guess, flawed and failed Climate Models used in the reports.
