Hydro sites conversion to Pumped storage sites

We need to make the most of our hydro by converting the sites into pumped storage energy farms.

This is possible if we can float solar PV panels on the water and erect wind turbines nearby.

Great advantage is hydro sites already established, electric grid connection available at little cost.

Universities with nearby hydro could head up paperwork plans for government funding.

  • Most of the existing hydro sites fail to have any 'lower' pool that stores the discharged hydro water. Dams are built upstream of the big drop and then flows away after generation discharge.

The few pumped storage schemes use existing natural pools / lakes / lochs and then add an extra high level pool/dam for the short term storage.

Living directly below the Faskally dam and hydro generation on the Tummel scheme, I get to notice these things. Lots of discussions, and awkward reflections about the influence of "Improvers" of local living conditions.

Plenty of activity here in Scotland on the multiplicity of 'renewable' schemes and cross fertilisation between them (Big wind farms feeding local pumped storage and onward transmission limitations..)
