Hydro sites conversion to Pumped storage sites

We need to make the most of our hydro by converting the sites into pumped storage energy farms.

This is possible if we can float solar PV panels on the water and erect wind turbines nearby.

Great advantage is hydro sites already established, electric grid connection available at little cost.

Universities with nearby hydro could head up paperwork plans for government funding.

  • I've been pondering along similar lines for a while. Unlike the flatter south/east around these parts we have lots of exiting reservoirs often two or three of them in a chain down the same valley with usually many tens of metres head between them. The energy storage from each wouldn't be huge, but over many such project it could add up. As you say, much of the expensive "Civils" has already been done. I can see some objections from the Water companies, as a little of the peak capacity would need to be lost to accommodate the pumped water - but arguably we should be leaving some spare space in reservoirs to accommodate excess rainfall and reduce downstream flooding anyway.

  • A fun read is Paul Burgess's "The Pumped Storage Hoax" pdf with it's 100% pumped storage as the strawman for knocking down.

Also, his 'real world efficiency' confuses round-trip efficiency with from-storage-to-generation efficiency (the pump part is earlier).

It also totally forgets the overarching need to reduce CO2 and consequent global warming/climate change consequence (less winter snows, less water in the hydro schemes, Catch 22).
