"RUSTIC ?" fancy lights

Well this should make you smile..  it certainly had me choking on my coffee..  we fitted some fancy chrome/steel weatherproof lights on a select development.. these houses are way south of half a million each so they had to have something stylish.. we went for a model from SEARCHLIGHT, 095 std, 096 with pir..
Strand Ip44 Stainless Steel Outdoor Wall Light with Clear Polycarbonate Diffuser
This 1 Light Outdoor Wall Bracket will make a simple, stylish and modern addition to your front or back garden. The stainless-steel appearance houses a clear polycarbonate shade where the bulb is clearly visible. As it is wall mountable, simply attach the item to the wall of your choice. This item has a rating of IP44, meaning that it is fully splash proof and suitable for use in a bathroom setting.

looked pretty good.. which as there are seven of these lights on each house… makes me happy.. what I wasn’t happy about was the rust that appeared not long after, just a ring around the body where there obviously wasn’t enough protective covering to ward off moisture.. and I was even less happy with the response from searchlight..  heres a snippet from one of the email that were bandied about between us…
“These are not marine grade stainless steel, this rusting in such a short space of time is cause by either salt, cement dust or fertilizers and I can see that there is agricultural land on one side and the sea on the other.   These are not suitable for where they are being fitted and we will not honour the warranty as such.”
So we cant use them within 5 miles of the coast ? or on a building that may contain cement, or near farmland ??????
I kid you not, seems they are unsuitable for most of WALES, SCOTLAND and a large part of ENGLAND too..
I requested a site visit , so they could see the problem for themselves..  seems they
” don’t think anything could be achieved by such a visit ”
Hmmm.. one thing that could be achieved matey.. showing some respect for a customer who has forked out over 600 smackers for one thing….

  • Gary, if you bought them from a wholesaler or other supplier it is the supplier of the goods who should carry the legal can of responsibility. They are not fit for purpose. Make a complaint and a claim to the supplier.

  • Do the maker's instructions indicate these unusual sensitivities ?  You may argue that you might reasonably  expect it to be at least as good a cheap plastic one from B and Q or wherever.

If no such warning was given, it may be worth pursuing as not fit for purpose as described. You will need to be watertight in showing when and where they were bought, what the instructions did or did not say, and what exactly has happened.

Don't take them back without taking date stamped photos of where they are first.
  • Interesting comment from the manufacturer. There is no such thing as "Marine Grade Stainless Steel", as I should know having just finished preparing a rather lengthy Technical Specification for a ship and its equipment. It would be interesting to know what grade of stainless steel they are using (we are specifying 316L grade stainless steel, though you will need to check what options there are).

  • Morning mr Z,  Yep, CEF who supplied them are being very helpful and offering a no quibble return..  its just the manufactures response I am taking issue with.. cos im a stroppy git..

  • I wonder if the aptly named 'Ocean lighting' who also sell that model knows they cannot be used by the sea..
They are these models I presume ?

No mention of that in the description.

Some notes on how stainless steel gets rusty.

  • Hi Mike, yep.. thats the ones, seems theres a warning to that effect.. on some paperwork that is stuffed into the box it comes in..  hmmm, now im doing a search on them they are coming in seriously cheaper than I paid....

Gary you are not a stroppy git, you are pursuing your justified complaint and claiming your rights as a consumer. Why shouldn't you, you paid good money for goods that are not worth good money. C.E.F. is a franchise business I believe, so the branch is only as good as its individual owner/manager. It is good that C.E.F. is accommodating in this matter, BUT will you get any compensation to cover the time involved in removing the rusty lights and then replacing them? I think not.

Not if Gary has supplied them in the course of his business. It is his customer who has all the consumer rights against him.
