"RUSTIC ?" fancy lights

Well this should make you smile..  it certainly had me choking on my coffee..  we fitted some fancy chrome/steel weatherproof lights on a select development.. these houses are way south of half a million each so they had to have something stylish.. we went for a model from SEARCHLIGHT, 095 std, 096 with pir..
Strand Ip44 Stainless Steel Outdoor Wall Light with Clear Polycarbonate Diffuser
This 1 Light Outdoor Wall Bracket will make a simple, stylish and modern addition to your front or back garden. The stainless-steel appearance houses a clear polycarbonate shade where the bulb is clearly visible. As it is wall mountable, simply attach the item to the wall of your choice. This item has a rating of IP44, meaning that it is fully splash proof and suitable for use in a bathroom setting.

looked pretty good.. which as there are seven of these lights on each house… makes me happy.. what I wasn’t happy about was the rust that appeared not long after, just a ring around the body where there obviously wasn’t enough protective covering to ward off moisture.. and I was even less happy with the response from searchlight..  heres a snippet from one of the email that were bandied about between us…
“These are not marine grade stainless steel, this rusting in such a short space of time is cause by either salt, cement dust or fertilizers and I can see that there is agricultural land on one side and the sea on the other.   These are not suitable for where they are being fitted and we will not honour the warranty as such.”
So we cant use them within 5 miles of the coast ? or on a building that may contain cement, or near farmland ??????
I kid you not, seems they are unsuitable for most of WALES, SCOTLAND and a large part of ENGLAND too..
I requested a site visit , so they could see the problem for themselves..  seems they
” don’t think anything could be achieved by such a visit ”
Hmmm.. one thing that could be achieved matey.. showing some respect for a customer who has forked out over 600 smackers for one thing….

Morning mr Z,  Yep, CEF who supplied them are being very helpful and offering a no quibble return..  its just the manufactures response I am taking issue with.. cos im a stroppy git..

    gary

Gary you are not a stroppy git, you are pursuing your justified complaint and claiming your rights as a consumer. Why shouldn't you, you paid good money for goods that are not worth good money. C.E.F. is a franchise business I believe, so the branch is only as good as its individual owner/manager. It is good that C.E.F. is accommodating in this matter, BUT will you get any compensation to cover the time involved in removing the rusty lights and then replacing them? I think not.

I think CEF is still a family owned business  and as just said Gary doesn’t have any consumer rights as a supplier of the lights, he is caught in the middle of the supply chain.

    Installed with stainless steel screwdrivers?

     Andy

The Wera 3335 series parallel slotted tip screwdrivers have a blade manufactured from 100% stainless steel, yet equally strong as conventional steel screwdrivers. They are ideal for industrial applications as they prevents extraneous rust forming on stainless steel fastenings due to contamination.

Gary's customer may wish to claim against Gary as the supplier if the goods are faulty, and Gary has a claim against the supplier of the faulty goods, and C.E.F. will have a claim against its supplier. Gary has no claim against the maker unless a valid guaranteed exists covering this scenario. Sale of Goods Act or its modern equivalent and all that.

I have a very simple policy called "expectation of performance" where if the client thinks that the "silent" fan will be silent, 50,000 hours for a LED life, an electric shower providing copious hot water, PIR that will detect etc etc, THEY supply, I fit!

For the profit margin on these items that can be often bought cheaper than I can get without hours on the www, it just isn't worth the hassle. I can't cope with whingy whiny clients...........My life is too short for that...................

  • Hi Bod, wish I was given the choice of "not supplying" the lights...   normal case of,  they want the best.. but cheap and even though the fittings only come with a years warranty..  I have to cover them for 2 yrs...  only response when you mention things like that..  " dont like it ?  dont quote...
