Question about BS EN 12101-6:2005, art. 11.6.3

The article 11.6.3 in BS EN 12101-6:2005 states the requirements for electrical cables used in pressure differential systems:

    a) fire-resisting cables meeting the temperature and time criteria in accordance with Table 7 or

    b) enclosed with fire-resisting construction, or installed external to the building where the cables cannot be endangered by fire, and

    c) cables protected from fire shall comply with the classification temperature/time of the component that they serve.


I'm reading again and again and I'm still not sure if the conditions should be met as follows:

    1. ( a or b ) and c

    2. a or ( b and c )

  • From the logic - let us assume the cable has to reach some piece of equipment that operates under conditions T1 P1,

    and the cable route  to get there must pass through a region of environment  P2 T2, which is more stressful than T1 P1


    If the cable is not otherwise protected then clearly it must pass T2 P2 and will also pass the lower stress P1 T1.

    If sheltered from the rigours of the P2 T2 environment by suiatable containment, it need only pass the worst condition to which it is exposed, whcih may be now P1 T1, or still the condition inside the enclosure, depending which is worst.

    Both answers above are the same, so  long as T2>T1 and P2 > P1.


    It might have been better if they said ' adequate for the conditions through which it passes and the termination conditions, whichever is more stressful.'

    It is then clear that when shielded, the condition through which it passes may no longer be the dominant, and if so you must consider the termination conditions as setting the harder limit.


    Of course, the temperature limit may be highest in one region but some other parameter, I could imagine humidity, corrosive gasses, sand storms, whatever, may be worse in another, the cable must of course be selected and protected to  survive both...
