How to wire a 1970's plug...

Just seen this and thought I'd share with you...

As part of the IET's 'Exploring the Archives' feature, my colleague Asha Gage‍ from the Archives Team gives us a quick look at an unusual item in the IET Archives. A tea towel from the 1970's made to help the public to understand the changes in wiring. ?

The proper colours are red, white and blue. The white became yellow due to the problems in getting a decent white rubber.

    Even "more proper":

Red, white, and green up to the 11th

Red. white, and blue from the 12th

Red, white, and blue in the 13th (until around 1962 from memory), then

    Red, yellow, and blue

  • Meanwhile I have customers handing me light fittings to install with black and white conductors.

And 3-wire test leads are red, blue and green

  • Even "more proper":

Red, white, and green up to the 11th    And CPC, black or bare, if fitted at all
Red. white, and blue from the 12th       And CPC, green  or bare, if fitted at all

So we had our live phase colour reused as as earth transition year as  1950 as 12th edition came out.
  • I've got  a very old frequency counter with the colours red blue and green where did that combination come from.?  Red is phase blue neutral green earth When I got it it had an ancient 13 amp plug on which I changed to a 5 amp one
  • During the transition from Red, Black, Green to Brown, Blue, Green/Yellow I guess.

13A? It can't really be ancient. Plug tops used to be 5A or 15A ?
  • Red, Blue, Green is typically military as they are the colours for a 3 core Def Stan cable.

    Best regards

  • Def Stan Cable means?

  • ebee:

    Def Stan Cable means?

Means a cable manufactured against the Def Stan. That is the UK Defence Standards, so it will generally be Def Stan 61-12.

  • Well if you`d said defence standard rather than def stan it woulda made it clearer and not needed a guess.
  • Thanks roger I wondered where that color code came from. My workshop has a mix of 5 15 and 13 amp sockets I fitted a 5 amp plug because I've got more sockets of the that rating so it's just easier
