Visit from DNO when changing CU on a Sunday morning........

Honestly not me, but a friend did a CU change and cut the seals to remove the cut-out fuse at around 09:00 and within the hour, a DNO van and man turns up at the address.

He wanted to know what was going on and my friend, the charmer he is, ended up promising to follow the man's advice to get a DP isolator fitted before doing his next CU change and that was all.

Fortunately the home owner wasn't there to witness the goings on.

Oh, and as you have already worked out, it was a Smart meter........

  • Oh so THATS how you get the DNO to turn up interesting!
  • As I said in another discussion, I have been told that there have been fines imposed within the Western Power area on electricians who have disconnected smart meters and WPD have turned up when authorised meter operatives have disconnected them.

  • I thought the smart meters (SMETS 1 ones at least) communicated with the customer's chosen supplier, rather than the DNO. Are the suppliers then passing 'power loss' details onto the DNO?

      - Andy.
  • It’s a petty they aren’t made to fit a DP isolator when fitting new smart meters.
  • Pretty much summed up here - around 16 minutes in.

  • I had eon round to fit an isolator. Half an hour later I had a phone call from WPD asking if I'd any issues with the electricity supply. I explained eon having been round. End of conversation. Yes, smart meter fitted. You would think the utility supplier would have contacted the DNO if this is the response you get.

That was an anticlimax - I was expecting a DNO van to turn up and some burly guys to get out and wrestle David to the ground.

  • perhaps on the isle of man, not I suspect in england.

To their procedures as an NICEIC contractor, I am authorised by SSE to cut seals and apply signed stickers, this also applies to NAPIT and other registered bodies. This post probably doesn't apply to them since they won't know who the offender is. How many DNO's would this incident apply to?, there is a need to check with the owner for their supplier now! Big brother is watching you.

From conversations in here, if you use those stickers, you are unusual.

What is even more unusual is SSE's (very reasonable) policy.
