    A surprising number of illicit calls originate within the UK, because ofcom are basically toothless and have almost never fined a company for breaking TPS rules.


    I usually get my elderly mum to give them my mobile number. Of the few who bother with calling, a 'why would we deal with a company that broke the law to contact her?' usually gets them to go away.


    This isn't just therapeutic, it results in the number eventually being marked as 'too canny to be scammed' and results in a massive dropoff in cold calls.

    Thanks for the link, Jaymack - I'll take a look, but it seems ideal.


    She gets bombarded with calls since she moved home despite having TPS - although I guess many of them originate overseas.

    Which is exactly as before - the only difference now is the warning message. There was never a possibility of using the site without cookies. At least it's more obvious now what's happening and you can always use your browser to delete cookies you don't want immediately afterwards.

    Generally you  know when it’s a call centre, so when they ask to speak to the business owner, the person responsible for the website or whatever just say I will get them for you, then carry on with what you were doing. Then when they give up and go away if you are using a mobile block the number.

    My old Mam is constantly bombarded by these people in every guise from funeral planners to fraud teams at the bank. I've eventually got her to understand that if she isn't expecting the call or doesn't know them then she needs to simply put the phone down

    I have had problems as most probably have, including Asian callers now with London telephone numbers - 0128..... etc. I got this unit from True Call Serve; I'm still working on it, when I have the time. It's for family and friends only, who pass through as normal, other callers need to enter another 1 digit number but I'm trying to change the standard message for a caller not on the list of family and friends, to make it more businesslike. It needs caller display though  At present it's a free service, OK for landlines. Most cold calls I understand, start from an automatic call system that sweeps a list of numbers: the first that picks it up is connected, the rest hang in mid air - a silent call which can also be alarming.

    Elderly neighbour of my Mam got totally fleeced in a phone scam over bank security recently - lost a pretty considerable amount of cash.


    If you've not seen it, watch "Cold Call" Episode 1 - it really is that easy


    Personally speaking, these people are the absolute scum of the earth and I wouldn't shed one tear for them if they came to a noisy, messy end.


    Keep the message on the agenda when your dealing with the old folks in in your life  - they are constant targets

    Listening to a report on my radio this morning about this story I heard someone say that you are better off buying second hand Christmas tree lights from a charity shop, because they will have been PAT tested.

    There's nothing recent about cookies - they've been there for donkey's years - what's changed recently is that web sites are now obliged to tell you they're using them so you have a fair chance of avoiding or getting rid of them if you want - all down to a bit of EU legislation.
