How I hate that stupid expression, "plug-socket". What is wrong with "power-point" or "power-socket"? As for Middlesex, that county went out of existence in the 1960s. Still, the Daily Wail lives in a time-warp so that is to be expected.
Getting back to the point, I think, like others, that this house was once used as a business premises and the sockets were positioned to suit the appliances that would be using them. This would explain why the kitchen appears to be fairly normal.
The next official electric installation inspection of this house is going to be fun!
