Generic Risk assesment for switching processes that identifys Arc Flash Hazards

Hello

Need some assistance please.  I am in the process of creating a Safe operating procedure for electrical working/switching.  It needs to be weighted towards identifying hazards that may occur as a result of arc flash and how to mitigate and what control measures to use.  I have various literature already and a reasonable grip on the subject but are looking to cross check myself and ensure there is nothing I have missed?  Ideally if anyone has a genic risk assessment for Switching (Either LV or HV) that identifies arc flash as an hazard that would be great.

Thanks Darren
  • Darren,

You might want to consider investing in some software to calculate the Hazard Risk Category and thus determine the required Arc Flash PPE.  ElectricalOM by ModecSoft has an Arc Flash add in.

  • Your first job is to list all your locations and then work out the fault clearance time and fault energy available. This will allow you to categorise your locations from those where minimal PPE is required, to those where you shouldn’t really be there during switching. Once you have these figures, you can look at what arc rating you need for each one, probably in cal/cm2. From here, you will be ready to start your risk assessments.

  • Thanks Alan.
  • Thanks MRF.  It was more from an end user point of view that I needed the process, Although I have had a look at software and its seems very good and will no doubt be useful in the future.

    Thanks Again
