Used Alkaline LR6 AA Cell Voltage

I find it interesting that used alkaline cells, when used as a pair exhibit near identical voltages.

Typically, two Mitsubishi LR6 AA cells, removed from a wireless room thermostat, one 1.478 volt the other also 1.478 volt.  Not the first time I have come across this.

Similarly, two brand new, unused Duracell Industrial Alkaline AA cells, both 1.600 volts.

All four cells tested off-load.

  • If they are used in series, you are really comparing the manufacturing tolerances of identical plate areas, so the cell capacity is the same, and for low current applications like the thermostat and clocks, the self discharge rates, which is mostly about contaminants and factory cleanliness.

I'd expect cells from the same date batch by a reputable make to be matched quite well. No name cells or varying batches far less so.

I am in the habit of writing the date in pencil or sharpie on things like clocks smoke alarms, and so on, so I can see if the rate of discharge is constant. It often is to within perhaps a  week in more than a year  or so, suggesting matching across batches from the same maker is also good.
