Used Alkaline LR6 AA Cell Voltage

I find it interesting that used alkaline cells, when used as a pair exhibit near identical voltages.

Typically, two Mitsubishi LR6 AA cells, removed from a wireless room thermostat, one 1.478 volt the other also 1.478 volt.  Not the first time I have come across this.

Similarly, two brand new, unused Duracell Industrial Alkaline AA cells, both 1.600 volts.

All four cells tested off-load.

  • Whether my voltmeter is accurate, I do not know. But the readings are certainly repeatable.  I shorted the probes together after each measurement to ensure that the meter did not attempt to hold the last measurement.

Rechecking again just now gives me: 1.600v for both new and 1.479v for both used.

The meters claimed accuracy (when new) was +/- 0.25% +5dgt DCV accuracy on its 400mV range and +/- 0.4% + 1 dgt on the 4.00V range which I used.
