Earthing conductor route

That’s a 25mm2 earthing conductor run some 20m along a border hedge to an electrode at the rear of the building. It is a permanent, recent installation. When I commented on it the contractor lost his cool and screamed “what the hell is wrong with it”? I thought that the answer was obvious but my written response on behalf of the client is to be framed within the context of 7671. I have no difficulty in digging up the relevant regulations but they are subjective in nature. Anyway, all good fun!
  • Not least the fact that it's likely to disappear if anyone notices it !

Big bits of copper go missing from HV subs, so this one stands no chance!
  • Ah! But! I presume it was carefully planned so that the earth rod is twenty metres away from where it could have been and is fact part of a cunning plan.

  • A person who did that is not a professional competent electrian. To then try and defend what they have done proves the first point and taking the p**s. So pack your tools and Foxtot Oscar and by the way you are not getting paid!
  • I did not say it was a good cunning plan, I was just pointing out that some thought had gone into planning this installation, the rod could have been where the cable started but obviously someone thought that was not the correct place to drive it into the ground.

It never ceases to amaze the lengths that some people go to to do a less than adequate job, twenty metres in this instance ?
  • What a mess - anybody would think that it is Christmas. Get rid of the holly and the ivy! ?

It cannot be any worse than the "surface-mounted" SWA which supplies next-door's front gates - just tucked below the fence panels.

In fairness, that cable could be a lot worse. The biggest risk appears to be when the hedge is trimmed - there is nothing to stop the cable being cut. ?

Agreed. And the cut cable may not be noticed at all until a disaster occurs.

  • Well I would not even give a DIYer any respect for that one

But it is very pretty as it meanders through the jungle.? (David Attenborough voice) Here we have the greater striped ground hugger, almost extinct due to intrusion of Humourless Erectus  with his secateurs and croppers. We best keep our distance and be down wind of it, as if cut, it can give a vicious bite if touched.
