Two earth paths?

  • came across a house split into 2 flats.two seperate cutouts/meters. The earthing was running from one cutout, to the earthing block (1st flat )then to the gas pipe(10mm). Then from that gas pipe to the 2nd flat earthing block. But earthing also coming from that 2nd cutout to the 2nd board earthing block. Is that a problem

  • If the two cut-outs are just different phases from the same substation it is not too serious, but it is not nice to have 2 supplies to the same building - better one 3 phase head and then split to meters, but it is probably too late for that.

If they are on different substations it gets more interesting, and even when it is'nt if both are TNC-s there is scope for a neutral diversion current to flow in the pipes.

It is not really any worse than 2 halves of a semi-detached house where water and gas may well share pipework in the street, so low risk.
