Two earth paths?

  • came across a house split into 2 flats.two seperate cutouts/meters. The earthing was running from one cutout, to the earthing block (1st flat )then to the gas pipe(10mm). Then from that gas pipe to the 2nd flat earthing block. But earthing also coming from that 2nd cutout to the 2nd board earthing block. Is that a problem

  • If the two cut-outs are just different phases from the same substation it is not too serious, but it is not nice to have 2 supplies to the same building - better one 3 phase head and then split to meters, but it is probably too late for that.

If they are on different substations it gets more interesting, and even when it is'nt if both are TNC-s there is scope for a neutral diversion current to flow in the pipes.

It is not really any worse than 2 halves of a semi-detached house where water and gas may well share pipework in the street, so low risk.

Is it over-sleeved in blue at both ends?

  • Both installations need a means of earthing and if the gas pipe is common to both installations then it needs to be bonded by both installations (or at one common point if both installations are supplied from a single common point) - so what you describe sounds to be correct.

  • When doing a Ze, you might have to leave both earth paths connected and note it on any certification, you can't really disconnect the other flat's earthing to test yours while theirs is live.

Bad practice quoting quotes on this forum it plays havoc on small screens.

I read that this morning and mistook it for an earthing conductors between the   suppliers earth terminals, which probably isn’t a bad idea.

That’s fine then. Will disconnect from where it is sharing and bond it to the new pipe when installed
