That statement in a recent thread clinched it.

Grahams Port point (I`n not a Port drinker myself though therefore it did not click at first) confirmed it.

The OPs name was another giveaway in hindsight. I bet he could write a book (and get it self published)

Oh heck - Am I going to get told off by the headmistress now?

  • I'm sure there is no harm in discussing matters in a non-confrontational and general sort of way, so we know what we mean but no-one else has a clue.

I think you should have indicated two books at least. It has taken a long time after all. I see it as important to be civil, and at the same time to point out the logical errors of fact, not so much for the benefit of the unconvertable of thinking, but for others who may come along later and read the thread and might be horribly mislead. Two parties can have varying opinions, but really if you see different facts, well to quote Dire Straits "Industrial Disease", one of them must be wrong. Though sometimes, more than one are wrong.

There are special PPE for those who engage in dubious working practices.

Sometimes in Engineering, there is no "right answer", and the "best answer" in the general case doesn't always suit every case.

  • I totally agree there - and with enough places and enough time, eventually some poor so-and-so will have the unexpected corner case arising in the installation before them. The best we can do is recommend what will work OK for the majority, and leave the freedoom in the rules to depart from that in the awkward situations. Engineering is all about having enough knowledge (and as designer, having enough authority) to recognise the tricky ones and to then say - "aha, but in this case we do not do that because" before we add an RF choke to the earth lead or whatever. What works very badly is a dogmatic application of the wrong rule book, and failing to recognise the wider picture and all the options.
