That statement in a recent thread clinched it.

Grahams Port point (I`n not a Port drinker myself though therefore it did not click at first) confirmed it.

The OPs name was another giveaway in hindsight. I bet he could write a book (and get it self published)

  • I totally agree there - and with enough places and enough time, eventually some poor so-and-so will have the unexpected corner case arising in the installation before them. The best we can do is recommend what will work OK for the majority, and leave the freedoom in the rules to depart from that in the awkward situations. Engineering is all about having enough knowledge (and as designer, having enough authority) to recognise the tricky ones and to then say - "aha, but in this case we do not do that because" before we add an RF choke to the earth lead or whatever. What works very badly is a dogmatic application of the wrong rule book, and failing to recognise the wider picture and all the options.
